FAQ : Extra 12 questions in Bitsat,Should we attempt them?

Bitsat is different from other entrance examinations like IIT JEE,AIEEE,EAMCET etc in many ways, the extra 12 questions being one of them.Every student writing Bitsat will be in a dillema whether to go for the extra 12 questions or should he just leave them and stay away from risk.Different people who have given a shot at Bitsat for the past 4 years have given different theories about these extra 12 questions. Some say it is the easiest part of the part while some say they took an unnecessary risk and stuck up with a lower Bitsat score.

So what is the funda of these extra 12 questions. Here is my complete explanation about the "EXTRA 12"

This is what is given in the brochure about the extra 12 - "If a candidate answers all the 150 questions (without skipping any question), the candidate will have an option of attempting 12 (twelve) extra questions, if there is still time left. These extra questions will be from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics only; four questions from each part. Further, once the candidate has opted for extra questions, he cannot go back for correction of any of the earlier answered 150 questions."

  • No you are not given any extra time to answer these questions
  • Yes, you need to attempt all 150 questions...You cannot leave any question blank
  • No you cannot go back any change any of your answers
  • Only Maths,Physics,Chemistry

So when to attempt the extra 12 questions:

  • You have atleast 20 minutes left.
  • You are sure about atleast 135 questions...by sure I mean you have given a shot at the questions and by some technique or method or on the basis of your memory you have confidently attempted 135 questions
  • You believe that you are lucky most of the time in guessing the correct answers(I am talking about the 15 questions you have to guess to complete 150)
  • There arent any method/formula based lenghty problems left in the paper...here I am talking specially about Maths...say you have a lenghty problem from calculus...you dont just guess it...if you have time you solve it and only then think of these extra questions.
  • If there are any memory based questions which you cant solve you can guess them and go for the extra 12.
  • This extra 12 questions according to BITS should be bit tuffer....On the other hand almost every Bitsian who has got a score of 350+( very good chance of getting a Computer Science or EEE degree) claim to have attempted these extra 12 questions and found them to be quite easy.

P.S:I have been very busy with my assignments, tests, projects and hell amount of academic stuff apart from the cricket matches, the movies, the oscars, outing with friends and loads of other stuff and for this reason I could not update the blog regularly.Till the mid of March I have a tight schedule and would not be able to update the blog regularly.Inspite of this tight schedule I will try my best to reply to your doubts within 24 hours :)

  2. Every question in BITSAT is for +3 and -1 marks.....Even these extra 12 questions are for +3 and -1 marks

  3. whats the mark scheme for these extra questions.is it possible to score 350+ without attempting these extra 12 questions

  4. Even these extra 12 questions are for +3 and -1 marks

ya it is possible to score 350+ without the extra 12 questions but people who have the caliber to score 350 wil surely go for the extra 12....Again a word of caution dont be tempted to attempt the extra 12 unless u have ample time and enough confidence

  6. if a student gets 1-3 or 4 marks less than the 80% criterion will the BITS authorities consider his score for the min qualification.

    ReplyDelete
  7. @Worried: Chemistry can be complete in 2 months if you are really serious....Follow only one book which you find easy(like Arrihant) and prepare from it....Spend enough time on Chemistry everyday(atleast 3 hrs for your preparation) then you can surely get above average marks in BITSAT

    @Anonymous: No...they wont...A score of 80% is a must...even if u get 79.99% you are not eligible

  8. please advice me as to how i should prepare for english and logical reasoning part of bitsat . my eng is quite strong. will joining in PAGE for a one week course for english and logical reasoning be useful or will i be wasting three hrs per day on this also suggest some books for these topics

    ReplyDelete
  9. @vasundhra : Please dont post it under the wrong topic...English is something you should have learnt all throughout your life....Bitsat English is not that tough...the exercises are similar to CAT English but not as tough as CAT....I don't think you will learn a lot in 7 days....Spend more time in solving the question papers at home....If you feel you are low on confidence then such short coaching might help....Otherwise no use...

Prepare from CAT related material and for grammar and other related topics your 11 and 12 English is enough

  10. I scored 264 marks last year, but still they did not select me, although the cut off was 264. Why do such rubbish things happen? Two students having the same score, but only one gets selected...why? that's rubbish from BITS's side.

    ReplyDelete
  11. @tapan: You liar :P the cutoff for Bitsat dual degree in Pilani campus was 263...hyd 248 so I am sure you are just trying to waste my time...or you were a fool who did not apply for dual degrees

Here is the link for the bitsat 2009 cutoffs

The good thing about Bits is that we dont have any fixed number of seats for any discipline...So 2 students with same marks will get the same degree in all cases

  12. sir my jee went too bad (although i was a quite above average student and a ntse scholar).i am now very much deprived of confidance please tell me how to crack bitsat with a boom.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Utkarsh: If you have prepared well for JEE then you have a good chance of cracking BITSAT.....Complete the extra topics which are not present in JEE during this time and practice as many online papers as possible :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. sir please tell me one thing more that for prepration arihant or mtg which is better and which online test series to join??

  15. is it absolutely necessary to attempt the extra 12 questions if one is to score above 350?..if not then how do i score 350+....also many people have said that most people who clear BITSAT get a rank in IITJEE...is it true?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @utkarsh : Any book is good...see it to that you complete your syllabus

@Devendra: One can even attempt 135-140 questions to get a score of 350+...Attempting the extra 12 depends on how much risk you are willing to take
People generally write all exams with same efforts...So it is true that most people who get a score of above 350+ clear JEE....on the other hand the cutoff for compsci which has more than 100 seats is around 350...so there are many who couldnt clear JEE but got a good score in BITSAT :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. thank god...that really boosts my confidence....i will manage around 155 in JEE out of 480 this year...do i stand a chance..also is it possible to change our stream after the first year?

    ReplyDelete
  18. do i stand a chance as in chance in BITSAT...

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Devendra: 155 might be the cutoff score for JEE according to many experts :) so you have performed decently in JEE

BITSAT is a different exam though the concepts are same...it is more about time management and your memory rather than your critical analysis....
So if you complete and revise your syllabus you have great chance of getting a score above 350 :)

  20. thank you arvind....ur doing a really good job running this blog...thanks a lot..

  23. @Ratnesh : Search properly before posting a comment...Simply irritates me :(
Anyways 30 days decent time to prepare....If you have not prepared for competitive exams then get a BITSAT cd....apart from completing your syllabus try to write at least one exam per day

  26. but 155 is definitely not the cutoff for iitjee this year...its over 170.

    ReplyDelete

  29. how can i attempt those 12 extra questions,if i don't know the ans of few questions, will leaving the question blank would do...and proceed to next question

    ReplyDelete
  30. what is the method of skipping in order to attempt the extra questions

    ReplyDelete
  31. @devendra: :)

@pari: No you cannot leave any question blank if you want to attempt the exra 12 questions....you will have to guess few questions...attempt all 150 questions and then go for the extra 12....

Guessing is an art to be practiced even while writing a mock test...if you are not good at guessing don't do it....it will have bad effects

    ReplyDelete
  32. is there any cut off for english or logical reasoning in bitsat like iit jee

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Anonymous : No cutoff ....Please search for the topics before posting a comment....When i answer questions so patiently why cant u search for the topics in which such comments are already answered

@Gurnank : Dude it is chemistry...you will have questions from Organic,Inorganic and Physical....What kind of question is that???

@Maansi: No I am not answering your question....Search for a topic called as hall ticket....post the question there....Cant you read the statement above and below this comment box???

    ReplyDelete
  36. are the 12 questions tough than the 150 one? is the level of questions lower than aieee?also suggest the books tobe referred

    ReplyDelete
  37. @krishna : These 12 questions are supposed to be tough...but all those who attempted them found it to be easy...maybe their level of preparation was different

    In general they are tough

And questions mostly will be of lower level compared to AIEEE

For books check other posts in the blog

  38. That's the main thing. Too many free passes last year; too many long innings; too many two-out walks that add 10, 12 extra pitches that aren't needed. That's an extra inning, that's an extra arm out of the bullpen.” (Lester walked 83 last year, ...
