People are often confused that duals in Bits-Pilani are same as duals in other engineering colleges. There is hell amount of difference.
- To start with the Duals degrees are mostly M.Sc(Hons) degrees...i.e. they are Science degrees and are not engineering dual degrees like M.Tech(i.e. B.Tech + M.Tech).
- After the completion of your first year you will be given a dual degree in an engineering stream depending on his/her performance in first year . For example if a guy joins in M.Sc.(Hons) Mathematics and after first year he cant get any dual in a engineering stream like EEE,EIE,CSE i mean any branch.
- All students irrespective of the degree they join in the campus do the same courses in first year(except C group).
- The whole point is a Science degree with an Engineering degree to give a great scope for Interdisciplinary research.
- This figure shows all the possible ways of a Science dual with an engineering dual.

- The Science and Engineering degrees are themselves recognized and the engineering degree you get through dual degree scheme is in no way different from the normal engineering degree.
- Though dual degree is for 5 years you spend your final year(i.e. 5th year) in a company doing your internship with decent pay or you have an option to do a thesis which is very helpful for getting admission into better colleges for MS.
- Apart from that you can do an engineering dual i.e. one engineering dual with another. There are people in the campus who are doing Computer science with EEE dual and they pass out in 5 years.
- At the end of 5 years you get two degrees along with a Masters degree in Science.
- The Science degree courses are in no way related to the Engineering degree courses except for few courses which are common for every student irrespective of his/her degree. So you can portray yourself as a Masters in Science or just as an Engineer or both.
- A dual degree means a study of two different fields so it helps a lot for higher studies where interdisciplinary research is given lot of importance.
- You spend your final year doing internship in companies ranging from Microsoft, yahoo to even Common wealth games(Click here for the complete list of companies),which means you dont waste your final year. And in many cases this final year internship is considered as work experience and students normally get placed in that company ( Which company will leave a student after giving them one year of training/work experience).
- If your aim is to get a good engineering degree even with low Bitsat score dual degree is the best option.
- The pressure to get a good dual degree is high as there is huge competition(Every person who comes to Bits is a good student in his/her school so obviously the level of competition is high).
- The number of students given dual in a particular engineering degree is around 40.For example the number of students with Computer Science dual is around40,With EEE dual is around 40 and so on.Here comes the problem. The total number of students in all Science degrees is close to 200 so it may happen that if you dont study in your first year you end up with very bad dual degrees(bad is a relative term and itz usage depends on the context and the person we are referring to ). For example people who dont study at all with CGPA<5>.A word of caution if you want to enjoy your first year(by enjoy I mean 24*7 enjoy zero studying) then you must not think of duals unless you are prepared for the consequences.
- You have to complete 2 degrees in 5 years so itz sometimes hectic. But you have only 6 courses structured every sem irrespective of your discipline.
- You have a placement option of only one week(coz you will be doing your intern) while engineering group people stay on the campus complete sem for their placements...many dualites do a thesis on campus rather than intern so that they can stay for placements the whole sem..also many dualites get their jobs during their internship(PS-2)
Compare this with the normal Computer Science engineering degree obtained from Bits
