Dual Degree in Bits Pilani, How is it different

People are often confused that duals in Bits-Pilani are same as duals in other engineering colleges. There is hell amount of difference.

  • To start with the Duals degrees are mostly M.Sc(Hons) degrees...i.e. they are Science degrees and are not engineering dual degrees like M.Tech(i.e. B.Tech + M.Tech).
  • After the completion of your first year you will be given a dual degree in an engineering stream depending on his/her performance in first year . For example if a guy joins in M.Sc.(Hons) Mathematics and after first year he cant get any dual in a engineering stream like EEE,EIE,CSE i mean any branch.
  • All students irrespective of the degree they join in the campus do the same courses in first year(except C group).
  • The whole point is a Science degree with an Engineering degree to give a great scope for Interdisciplinary research.
  • This figure shows all the possible ways of a Science dual with an engineering dual.
  • The Science and Engineering degrees are themselves recognized and the engineering degree you get through dual degree scheme is in no way different from the normal engineering degree.
  • Though dual degree is for 5 years you spend your final year(i.e. 5th year) in a company doing your internship with decent pay or you have an option to do a thesis which is very helpful for getting admission into better colleges for MS.
  • Apart from that you can do an engineering dual i.e. one engineering dual with another. There are people in the campus who are doing Computer science with EEE dual and they pass out in 5 years.
Advantages of dual degrees:

  • At the end of 5 years you get two degrees along with a Masters degree in Science.
  • The Science degree courses are in no way related to the Engineering degree courses except for few courses which are common for every student irrespective of his/her degree. So you can portray yourself as a Masters in Science or just as an Engineer or both.
  • A dual degree means a study of two different fields so it helps a lot for higher studies where interdisciplinary research is given lot of importance.
  • You spend your final year doing internship in companies ranging from Microsoft, yahoo to even Common wealth games(Click here for the complete list of companies),which means you dont waste your final year. And in many cases this final year internship is considered as work experience and students normally get placed in that company ( Which company will leave a student after giving them one year of training/work experience).
  • If your aim is to get a good engineering degree even with low Bitsat score dual degree is the best option.
Disadvantages of Dual degree:
  • The pressure to get a good dual degree is high as there is huge competition(Every person who comes to Bits is a good student in his/her school so obviously the level of competition is high).
  • The number of students given dual in a particular engineering degree is around 40.For example the number of students with Computer Science dual is around40,With EEE dual is around 40 and so on.Here comes the problem. The total number of students in all Science degrees is close to 200 so it may happen that if you dont study in your first year you end up with very bad dual degrees(bad is a relative term and itz usage depends on the context and the person we are referring to ). For example people who dont study at all with CGPA<5>.A word of caution if you want to enjoy your first year(by enjoy I mean 24*7 enjoy zero studying) then you must not think of duals unless you are prepared for the consequences.
  • You have to complete 2 degrees in 5 years so itz sometimes hectic. But you have only 6 courses structured every sem irrespective of your discipline.
  • You have a placement option of only one week(coz you will be doing your intern) while engineering group people stay on the campus complete sem for their placements...many dualites do a thesis on campus rather than intern so that they can stay for placements the whole sem..also many dualites get their jobs during their internship(PS-2)
Here is the course structure of M.Sc(Hons) Mathematics with B.E.(Hons) Computer Science:

Compare this with the normal Computer Science engineering degree obtained from Bits

  1. hey u mean like in d 1st yr v take a engineering degree n then in d 2nd yr combine it wit a sci degree..........????OR VICE VERSA.....????????////
    ReplyDelete
  2. Vice versa...the thing is you start of with a science degree...After first year based on your performance you are given an engineering degree
    ReplyDelete
  3. if i score 350+ cant i take an engineern degree 1st followed by d odr 1....????????//////
    ReplyDelete
  4. You can always opt for an engineering degree.....but some engineering degrees like computer science are very high...so people with low Bitsat scores go for duals hoping to get a compsci dual later on :)
    ReplyDelete
  5. hey pooh here....u mean i can take an engineerin degree in d 1st yr n combine it wit a sci degree in da 2nd yr....rite???????/////
    ReplyDelete
  6. n wat r d best options in engineerin dual????////////
    ReplyDelete
  7. An important point to note is that you can always get an engineering degree directly if you have a good Bitsat scores....check here for the cutoff for all the degrees here

No pooh it is the other way around...You join with a Science degree and then based on your performance in first year you can get an engineering dual

@Anonymous 2: All the engineering degrees which a person can get directly through BITSAT can be got as dual( based on your performance in your first year )

  8. how many hours should i study with time distribution for each subject from now (upto 2 months)to get a score above 400 I am a student from AP inter
    ReplyDelete
  9. The key is not the total time you spend on your books but how effectively you spend it...A person may study for only 6 hrs everyday and get a better score than a guy who studies 18 hrs everyday

Your success depends on your concentration and determination....prepare a time table....prepare only from the syllabus give in the brochure....Strictly follow the time table...spend rest of the time in day trying to solve few tricky problems....Make very short notes which you can refer at the end

According to me a 10hr preparation every day would do

    4 hrs on Mathematics
    3 hrs on Physics
    3 hrs on Chemistry

And 2 weeks before Bitsat spend extra 2 hrs on English

  12. If someone gets a good enough score in bitsat, say 360, can he choose(ie reserve, so that it does not depend on 1st years performance ) an engineering degree directly like EEE, and do MSc later. Or does he have to choose MSc to be eligible for Dual?
    ReplyDelete
  13. I think I have created a state of confusion among many students :)

I will try to clear it.Still in doubt feel free to comment

If you get a score above 300 you can directly join Engineering instead of getting into an M.Sc. degree

But the cutoff for engineering is somewhat like this for Pilani campus

    360+ - CompSci
    350+ - EEE
    340+ - Mechanical/EIE
    320+ - Chemical/Civil

    Example 1:
You have a score of 330+ you can get Chemical but no you want a better engineering degree(i am not saying Chemical is bad) but you cannot get it in Pilani Campus

So you have two options -

Get an engineering degree in Other campus - Say you get Mechanical in Goa or EEE in Hyderabad

    (or)

You take an M.Sc. degree work hard for one more year get a better engineering degree as dual

    Example 2:
You have score of 280+ in Bitsat. You have a decent rank in AIEEE or local engineering entrance like DCE or EAMCET.
But you want to get into one of the best colleges. So you take an M.Sc. degree work hard and get a good engineering degree as dual

    Moral of dual degree:
The first choice is always a normal 4 years engineering degree. But if you dont get your desired engineering degree in the desired campus you can go for the 5 years M.Sc. degree work hard and get a good engineering dual

@Dylan - Hope I have cleared your doubt.

IS THE DUAL DEGREE SIMILAR TO A NORMAL B.SC-M.SC DEGREE?I WANT TO DO M.SC PHYSICS IS IT COMPULSORY TO TAKE AN ENGINEERING DEGREE IN SECOND YEAR?OR IS IT LIKE B.SC PHYSICS-M.SC PHYSICS?I AM NOW PREPARING FOR EAMCET AND I GOT MY AP STATE RESULTS 88.7% i am not thorough with the syllabus at all especially chemistry and maths bits syllabus is more than inter.I want to get m.sc physics in hyderabad.i put my date for bits late so that i can prepare well .i put date on june 8th.eamcet is on may 14th.if i study well i think i can get around 115 in eamcet.is 23 days enough for preparing for bits.i don't know what reference books and mock tests to try so please suggest your opinion.also on which topics to concentrate on.actually i did not write jee and am not writing aieee as i have very low confidence.is bitsat tougher or easier than aieee?also i think ncert books will help but nowhere in hyderabad are they selling ncert books.do you know any place where they do?Need your help, a bit low on both confidence and practice and also not thorough with the basics much.please help me by suggesting how i should plan out everything.thanks a whole lot.

i forgot to ask;suppose the science and engineering degrees have to be parallelly completed and that you will be allotted engineering degree based on first year performance.then do we get to choose the engineering degree which we prefer?i want to do mechanical and suppose i am offerred cse, eee, eie, etc;can i say no and take mechanical;or in second case suppose i am offered chemical, civil, etc;can i say no and take mechanical;or is it compulsory to do the degree which they allot.please clear the doubt.thanks a lot.
    ReplyDelete
  16. @SivaKumar : You remind how I was 4 years ago...No confidence....lots of doubts....only EAMCET preparation but a strong determination

Firstly EAMCET is an examination of good level...though the questions are not that tough we learn a lot of techniques and solve problems quickly which is very important for exams like AIEEE and BITSAT

Secondly try to prepare the topic from Narayana or Chaitanya AIEEE material if you cannot get NCERT books...the AIEEE material is more than enough to get a good score in BITSAT

For practising papers try MTG BITSAT explorer available in every book shop in Hyderabad(atleast good ones)
    ReplyDelete
  17. @Sivakumar : For your dual degree questions here is my explanation:

    1) We do not have a B.Sc. degree...you are directly given an M.Sc. degree after 4 years

2)Based on your performance in 1 year You can again choose your choice of engineering provided you clear the cutoff....If you are interested in Mechanical then you can go for Mechanical instead of taking CompSci or EEE

3)When you take a dual degree in Engineering you 4 years M.Sc. degree will be converted into a 5 years M.Sc + Engineering degree

4)If you dont take engineering dual you can pass out in 4 years with an M.Sc. degree

And you have a lot of time to prepare for your BITSAT...work hard and success will be yours
    ReplyDelete
  18. hi,
is'nt it possible to join as a mechanical eng student and opt for a dual degree.
Isn't it unfair that people who perform better in BITSAT cannot opt for their choice of eng stream as well as study for a science dual degree.
    ReplyDelete
  19. @Utkarsh : Who said you cannot.....but for that your performance in 1 year in BITS should be good

Some students in campus are with the following degrees

    Mechanical with Computer Science
    Mathematics with Physics
    EEE with Physics
    EIE with Computer Science
    EEE with Computer Science
    Computer Science with Physics
    Mechanical with Physics
    Information Systems with EEE
    Information Systems with Mathematics

In BITS one can pass out with 4 degrees in a span of 7 years and with two masters

    E.g: CompSci + EEE + M.Sc. Physics + M.E. ( some specialization)

BITS has the most flexible structure....IIT's dont even come close to the BITS system...

  21. Abhijith: can one opt for MSC Bio and chose engineering in second year as duel degree? whats the thing about cut off? how many in MSC will get a chance for duel degree?
    ReplyDelete
  22. @Sameer : About 320+...for good degrees 330+...and for approach please check the other posts

@abhijith : Ya you can....Every Person in M.Sc. will get a dual in engineering ( some with very very performance get Pharmacy dual - say 3 our of 200 dual degree students)

    P.S : I was once a M.Sc. Bio with Comp Sci guy before getting a transfer to M.Sc. Maths...currently

M.Sc.(Hons) Mathematics with B.E.(Hons) Computer Science
    ReplyDelete
  23. Abhijith:Tx for ur clarification.
    ReplyDelete
  24. hey....i read d whole thn....n hav a doubt....can u shift frm one dual 2 d odr....like i got 264 in bitsat dis yr....n accordin 2 previous yrs cutoffs id nly gt m.sc bio in bits pilani....bt m nt at all interested in bio....so can i like join up bits wid bio bt later on shift 2 anodr sub of my chioce...???
    ReplyDelete
  25. @Abhijith : :)

@purvi : Ya you can...I had a transfer from M.Sc. Bio to M.Sc. Mathematics...anyways for a dual degree transfer you need a high cgpa in 1 year(i.e. very good performance in 1 year)...And competing with 700+ guys(for Pilani) and 500+ for Goa and yd is tough task as they all are more or less of the same level...it ultimately comes down to your determination to study among so many distractions and also need lots of luck

In short don't join only hoping for a dual degree transfer...instead join because you get do an engineering degree if your choice if you perform well
    ReplyDelete
  26. Abhijith: Duel degree thing still confronts. is not MSc Bio contrasts with BE? its ok with maths or phisics but with bio is it not difficult?
    ReplyDelete
  27. @Abhijith : I will clearly explain all other doubts about dual degrees in my future posts...I am kind of busy right now

    ReplyDelete
  30. @vaibhav : Already answered

@jes : Your efforts in this extra year will determine your success....many people have made it big by repeating an extra year...You also need to remember that many people have scored worse than before purely because they did not have the determination and were fed up of the studies...

So make a wise choice my friend

  31. MALA:
    1. I have scored 266 in BITSAT 2009. What are my chances of getting selected and in which campus?
    2. How many Seats are there for M.Sc.(Hons) in Goa and Hyderabad?
    3. Approximately, how many of these M.Sc.(Hons) end up getting dual degrees with CSE, EEE, E&I and Mechanical. As I wish to have a dual degree only in one of the four given above.
    4. What should be my CGPA in the first year to get each of these duals?
    5. Does anyone joining an M.Sc.(Hons)invariably get a dual irrespective of her score in First year?
    6. What is the scope for B. Pharma graduates from BITS?
    7. I am likely to get a decent college and seat in Karnataka. Which will be better? An M.Sc.(Hons) with a dual from BITS or an engineering from a pretty decent college in Bangalore?
    Thanks
    ReplyDelete
  32. @Mala : Is mala ur name????

    1) You mite get duals in Goa and Hyd campus..maybe Bio Sci in Pilani

    2) Around 200 in All campuses

    3) Around 35-40 in CompSci...35-40 in EEE...35-30 in EIE...35-30 in Mechanical

    4)For CompSci 7.8-8+...For EEE 7.5+...for EIE 7.2+...for Mech 7+ (just an approximation)

    5)Ya they do

    6) They can go for higher studies...the placement scenario is not as good as engineering

    7) What do you mean by decent college??? If it is not an NIT go for BITS :)

And most importantly if you are opting for a dual be prepared to work hard for one more year....the pressure will be high as you will have to perform among the people who are good at studies
    ReplyDelete
  33. I've heard that people doing M.sc go in the teaching line........is it true?
supposingly a person doing msc mathematics gets dual in mechanical or cse.....can he get placed in companies such as Microsoft or shell?
    ReplyDelete
  34. @bikram : Teaching is the best profession one can ever do...and it also the toughest

Anyways M.Sc. is not always teaching stuff...you can go into research...

You can be placed in companies like M$ and shell with your engineering degree

    ReplyDelete
  37. @vamshi : Ya it is possible...And for the sites search this blog properly :)..there is alnik to huge list of free bitsat sample papers

@sweta : Practice one paper per day...and spend time on revison...You must be good with all topics to get a good score....Only studying Maths and Eng wont help...ya will check the sites

  38. wat must be the score to get a dual degree

  39. i have been doing d papers posted in bitsexam.com and workingout with arihant ant mtg especially for bits.how far this could work out in d long run period untill my exam?and further what the pattern should i plan out to perform well in my exm.my exm is on 1st of june...
    ReplyDelete
  40. @vamshi : Dont work on more than one paper everyday...spend lot of time revising old concepts and learning new concepts or rectifying you mistakes in the mock test you take

I repeat again not more than one mock test per day
    ReplyDelete
  41. Chirag : I just took my test today, and scored 285 - I guess , It was sort of the score I was getting on an average in the sample papers I took.

Will I be able to get into Pilani campus? And what would be the best options that I would have to choose from?

I really am interested in doing comp. science engg. or an electronics and comm. engg.

I don't know whether to celebrate or to feel sorta dejected...

Will I get a decent double degree from Pilani???
    ReplyDelete
  42. Chirag : I really want to get into a b.tech course and don't want just a Bsc.+Msc. . What's your suggestion?
    ReplyDelete
  43. thnx...4 ur advice....i really like dis site n keep myself updated wid it :)....jst had a doubt...u mentioned dat d dual degree is for 5 yrs n d 1st yr goes in stdin nly d sub u opt 4....n d 5th yr u hav ur internship...so dat leaves u wid nly 3 yrs 4 d engineerin + d science degree....isnt dat really hectic???
    ReplyDelete
  44. i ve done my bitsat 2009 and had a bad score of 181 . i messed up many easy ques ... n felt dat maths wz lengthy ... so i think i ve no chance of gettin a b.e. degree in any of the bits campuses... so wid dis score can i get admitted to a dual degree course with M.Sc math/physics/chem. i kno i cud ve done better.but i became over-confident.i work hard... so wat r my chances of makin it into any of the bits campuses for a dual degree with d above subjects as my choices? Also one more doubt ... in a dual degree how do they offer us a M.Sc degree widout us completing B.Sc? Or is B.Sc topics integrated into the dual degree?
    ReplyDelete
  45. @Chirag : Celebrate...you should get a dual degree in Pilani campus...maybe Chemistry

@Anonymous : Ya you can...try to get above 310 for Pilani campus and 290 for other campuses...for good degrees 330+ and 310+ respectively

@purvi : It is hectic as I have wrote in this post...but the fact being we dont do more than 6 courses any sem ( unless we take extra electives)
    ReplyDelete
  46. @feb : Dont thin k so...the cutoffs re not expected to go below 230 for any degree

Ya you can get an M.Sc. without doin a B.Sc....that is the beauty of the BITS system :)
    ReplyDelete
  47. i want to take up Msc physics
as i want to do research in astrophysics,,but could the enginnering degree be of any help to me
    ReplyDelete

and also what are my chances anyways...if i have an interest in engg, which dual deg will be good.
    pls answer....sorry a bit long..

  50. @Anonymous: BITSAT is not a lenghty or tuff exam...it is tricky...you will make minute mistakes and you loose marks...the one who identifies the tricky part will get a good score...you mite get dual or B.Pharm but I am not sure

  51. akk: sir i got 263 in bitsat. actually i am interested in doing research in particle physics & astrophysics.
which engg degree will support it?
if i don't get bits pilani 4 duals, which colleges(NITs) shud i prefer to support my cause?
sir do u hav ne idea bout the level of NISER & UM-DAE CBS? they too provide dual degrees in MSc.
    i wud be thankful.......
    ReplyDelete
  52. please tell what are the chances with scores above 250something.......
    ReplyDelete
  53. @akk : Actually such subjects are so versatile that you can enter with any engineering degree....A physics M.Sc. degree should help but I doubt if you will get it according to the last year cutoffs

I dont know much about degrees from NISER & UM-DAE CBS

@250 : Any person above 250 score must apply for BITSAT...he/she would most probably get a dual in Bio
    ReplyDelete
  54. my score-286.which dual degree i can opt for in d pilani campus?
    ReplyDelete
  55. @ankur : Mostly Chemistry in pilani campus...if lucky maths or physics
    ReplyDelete
  56. Hey,I got 288 in BITSAT.I checked the last year's cutoffs.I'll probably get chemical/civil/ at Goa/hyd campus. Is there a huge difference between the standards of the Pilani and Goa campusThe? concept of dual degree sounds very streamlined but is it job oriented? Is M.Sc worth its value in obtaining a job, other than the research field? Is the value of an engineering degree obtained with a dual degree practically equal to that of degree obtained solely?
    ReplyDelete
  57. @Anonymous : I wont say it is job oriented...infact no engineering other than IT is job oriented...one has develop himself into entering the industrial sector

And the degree obtained through dual is same as the normal engineering in all aspects
    ReplyDelete
  58. suppose i opted for dual degree .how hard i have to work to get electronics/cs in 2nd year
    ReplyDelete
  59. @Anonymous : 50% of your hard work in 12 but with a lot more pressure and lot of diversions....more mental strength required than the actual time you spend on the books :)
    ReplyDelete
  60. I read all the posts. But I still have got a doubt. You said unless we work hard in the first year we will have to face the consequences, like they won't let us take the b.tech degree or they dismiss you from the institution?
Only a very few get transfer to the branch they like who have performed very well.So what about the others? They will just have to do their M.Sc in the subject they opted?Because I cannot blindly say I will score a very high cgpa before I join the institute.
    ReplyDelete
  61. Abhijith: whats the CGPA required for duel in Civil at Hyd. I amy get Bio for 257 i scored.
    ReplyDelete
  62. @Nithin : No they dont dismiss you...by work hard I mean you shld get a decent CGPA to get a good dual...if you dont study properly you will get a bad dual...and in worst case a B.Pharm degree as dual....

You getting confused between a transfer and a dual...read the post about dual degree clearly

Every guy who joins in M.Sc.(hons) will get a dual in engineering/b.pharm...the better the cgpa the better the dual..the compsci cutoff which is supposed to be the best engineering dual has a maximum cutoff cgpa of 8...if you have a CGPA of 7 you get Mech duall...with a CGPA of 5 you get Civil/Chemical dual

On the other hand for a transfer to other degree you need a very high CGPA...mostly above 9.5

@Abhijith : Why do you want a dual in Civil???Work hard try for a better engineering dual :)
    ReplyDelete
  63. sir,
u told that u transfered urself from msc bio to msc maths.....what cgpa is required to do that?????

  66. 1. Could you please guide me on my chances for getting EEE in Goa and Hyderabad campuses or ECE at Hyderabad campus- I have scored 307 in BITS 2009.
    2. Alterntaively with my score of 268 in AIEEE 2009, what are my chances of getting ECE in NIT at Kurukshetra, Jaipur, Nagpur or Hamirpur?
    3. Are BITS Goa and Hyderabad better than the above NIT for pursuing ECE or EEE in terms of placements and further studies?

  67. I have a doubt!!

Most of the above posts talk of transfers from M.Sc to B.E.

If i take up B.E. at some campus, then how about a transfer to a better branch?

for eg. if i get BE Mech at pilani campus, then could i somehow get a transfer to EEE in d same campus?
    ReplyDelete
  68. @Vijay : Might get in Goa ...border case...A BITS degree is anyday better than an NIT degree... you will get the same degree in all campuses....

As for joining NIT's do visit www.bits360.com before taking any decisions...the guys there will clarify all your doubts :)

@Anonymous : Check the post on difference between duals and transfer... You can get a trnasfer irrespective of your original degree if you have a very good CGPA

  73. sir i am rupali i'd lyk to ask if i take msc bio (276) in pilani n perform really wel in first year wil i get computer science as ma branch.would it b similar to course followed by oder guys who originally hav comp sci as dere branch acc to dere bitsat score.and wht wil b ma degrees after 5 years??b.e+ ms?thanks 4 ur help sir..can v still go 4 an mba after dat..
    ReplyDelete
  74. @rupali : Ok I have explained it many times but I will repeat it again

If you perform well you will get CompSci dual - Need a CGPA of 8+/10

Ya it is same...except that you also do an extra degree...

    After 5 years you get 2 degrees M.Sc.(hons) Bio + B.E. (hons) Computer Science i.e. M.Sc. + B.E.

You can use a combination of the two degrees or individually

Ya who said ou cant do an MBA??? I am myself planning to do an MS followed by an MBA :)

Sir, i am from Karnataka, and i am planing to get a MSc. Mathematics Hons. in BITS Pilani or Bits Hyderabad. Sir, later on i am planing to do a dual with BE electronics and communication. Sir, what do you suggest should be my score.
And sir i a bit confused. The dual is based completely on 1 year performance, or does it have to do with present score. Sir, i will be writing my BITSAT on June 2nd. Sir, which books do you recommend i peruse through before that. Pls help me out sir, this is my last option.

  76. Sir, i have purchased Arihant Bitsat 2009. will it be enough if practice it completely. Sir, if you have any suggestions. My exam in on June 2nd.

  77. Hi Arvind: Your comments have been invaluable. I have a bitsat score of 284 in 2009 and i am getting convinced with your advise of taking a dual degree at Bits Pilani. I am thinking of taking Eco as my MSc course and have the following queries:

    1. How do you rate this as compared the other Msc courses for dual degree?

    2. Which engg. branch would go well with MSc Eco.

    3. How many people in the MSC courses take the dual degree route and what CGPAs are required to get a decent engg. branch in 2nd year?
    ReplyDelete
  78. hi arvind
    i've got 313 in bitsat.
    1) do u think i'll get chemical eng at bits pilani?
    2) if so is it possible to take up mech/eee/cs in the second year as well(meaning dual b techs). if yes, then what are the cgpa's required for each of these?
    3) is getting a transfe tougher than doing the above?
    ReplyDelete
  79. @Aleph : The dual is based completely on your previous years performance...less time so revise your basics and practise online tests...work on your mistakes in Mock tests...Arrihant should do

    @Aditya :

1)The best M.Sc. course according to me :)...should be everybodys first preference

2)All engineering degrees go well with Eco :)

    3)Every person gets a dual in engineering/b.pharm

    For CGPA's refer other comments

    @313 : COngrats :)

    1) Mostly yes
2)Ya it is but is as good as getting a transfer yo Mech/EEE/CS - CGPA required is above 9.5 which is very very very tough :)

Less than 10 students get such B.E. trnasfers/duals so dont join Chemical hoping to get a transfer or dual...instead make a sensible choice...choose duals or better degrees in other campuses

  85. @Debjit : Wrong topic but thats great news...they finally introduced Manufacturing engg...that is a specialization and was supposed to be sponsored by TVS...I am not sure if it is the case....

But that is a very good degree...BITS has one of the best faculty for Manufacturing Engineering in Asia :)

    @Mala again :
1)read the post on difference between duals and transfer
    2)Hmmm cant say....
    ReplyDelete
  90. @Confused : Depends on whether you are interested to get a better engineering degree than chemical as dual i.e. your commitment to work hard and get a good dual

    Go for Goa over Hyd

  91. hi, sankeerth again
can i take dual degree in physics in the first year, n then go for civil engineering in 2nd year.what CGPA i need to get to join ECE or civil in the 2nd year?????
    my BITSAT score is 270...
what r my options in BITS (HYD/GOA/PILANI)
    ReplyDelete
  92. @sankeerth : Did not get you....you are talking about a transfer or dual???

Anyways check the post on difference between transfer and a dual
    ReplyDelete
  93. sankeerth
    the post says as follows
(After the completion of your first year you will be given a dual degree in an engineering stream depending on his/her performance in first year . For example if a guy joins in M.Sc.(Hons) Mathematics and after first year he cant get any dual in a engineering stream like EEE,EIE,CSE i mean any branch.)

(If your aim is to get a good engineering degree even with low Bitsat score dual degree is the best option.)
based on this post i have asked the previous question......
    ReplyDelete
  94. @sankeeth : For EEE in Pilani and Goa a CGPA of 7.5+...there is no ECE in Pilani or Goa
For Civil dual a CGPA of 5.3+ should do

  95. Joel : I am getting into PSG tech. coimbatore into core engeneering in EEE and in bits a dual degree from pilani with my score of 284. Which one is better choice. Is there a pcm cutoff in bits and if so what is the cutoff for different curriculums??

My BITSAT score is 311.I want to pursue in pilani campus. As per last year's cut-off,I know its difficult for me to get mech or EEE.
So,I want to take dual now..
If u wud be in my position, wat wud u do?
    ReplyDelete
  100. @Guy from Karnataka : If you are committed enough to get the desired dual go for it...but the more sensible choice would be to go for the course of your choice in Goa Campus...

I would have joined Goa campus...it is very good

    I am from Delhi.
My BITSAT score is 276. What are my chances of getting a regular engg. course in BITS pilani, goa and hydrabad.
Would you advise me to opt for the dual degree course? If i work hard in my first year, is it guaranteed that i will get some engg. course? I am, however, interested in comp science.

  105. Is BE in not so interested subject is better than Dual degree or Doing Dual and trying for required BE is better option? BE is 4 (3+1) years and Dual is 5 (4+1) years. I my understanding right.
    ReplyDelete
  106. I am confused regarding which BE subject to apply. Guessing market after 4/5 years, what is your suggestion. If you rank all BE, it will be of great help.
    ReplyDelete
  107. @Anonymous 1 : People go for duals when they dont get an engineering of their choice...so go for duals if you dont get a good engineering

Again ranking B.E. is just an indirect way of asking who getz placed better....did you know that an M.Pharm guy earns a lot more than an IT guy after MS...doesnt mean I advise people to join B.Pharm and then do M.Pharm

It all depends on your interests
    ReplyDelete
  108. sumanth:i have contacted u earlier through gmail[sorry to waste ur time though]my score is 291... i always dreamed of studying bio tech in bits... i cared 4 nothing else but BITS... i've spent days and nights dreaming about it... i found out very recently that there's no bio-tech in it all my dreams have shattered :(:(:(:( i dunno what to do....if i do a MSC bio can i b given an engineering degree in bio tech[though it is not offered at BITS]so that i can do my ME bio tech at BITS itself?????? sorry to ask if that was a stupid question.....
and by the way can i expect pilani... for a dual degree????? if a dual is better than direct/normal engineering why is it that more people [refer for B.E than a dual degree?????
    ReplyDelete
  109. @sumanth : Dont worry
The good thing about BITS is apart from the normal transfers there are transfers to higher degrees

If you take up M.Sc. Bio or B.Pharm and have a CGPA above 7 after 3 years you can jump to an M.E. and complete both your Bio degree and M.E. in 5 years

BTW if you also want to do an engineering degree as dual with Bio and then do M.E.... which means three degrees you can passout in 6 years

The combo would be like M.Sc. Bio with B.Pharm with M.E. Biotechnology...sounds good na

Because not many people are interested in doing research and stuff...and many dont want to waste and extra year

The fact is 80% students join dual degree to get a better engineering degree and so if you get an engineering directly with your BITSAT score why take up a dual
    ReplyDelete
  110. ZIA : sir...i had taken admission in vnit,in chemical engineering..but was not satisfied with my performance in the enginneering entrance exams and also wanted a better branch possibly in a better college...so i took a sem withdrawal and prepared for iit, aieee and bitsat..
aieee score is good but i want to prefer bits as i want to study in BITS,PILANI.
my score in bitsat is 292. i think i will go for msc physics and work hard and try to get a good engg. dual as i prefer pilani msc dual over goa or hyderabad BE only..

    1. worst case scenario: what cgpa will get me civil/chem dual(i dont want to end up in b.pharm)
    2. i turned 19 now.as i have taken a drop and am going to give in 1 more year for dual, will my age be a criterion for placement?
    3. you said earlier in the blog that one can pass out with 4 degrees in 7 years..plz explain with example.

    4. for example i take msc physics..what cgpa do i need for change to BE(hons) only and how much for engineering dual(eg. eee + cse)[is it 9.5 + for both?]

5.approx. how many hours did you study for your change in first year??

6.this is not a question.sorry for such a long comment.thanks in advance for your help//
    ReplyDelete
  111. @Zia : I always like people who have sensible and genuine doubts and post their queries in points...

    1) A CGPA of less than 5
    2) Your age will not hinder your placement/higher studies
    3) Ya you can...example one joins EEE...he does a dual in CompSci...and then an M.Sc. dual say Maths and finally M.E. say in Computer Science

    Final degree B.E. EEE + B.E. CompSci + B.E. Mathematics + M.E. CompSci - 7 years

    4) For EEE and CSE the cutoff is almost same and is usually above 9.5..and some times 9.7

    5) I did study a lot because I am not among the so called brilliant guys.... things make more sense to me when i spend more time .. but thats not the case with many...anyways if you dont have any diversions and are focused it is easy to get a good dual.... but for a transfer you need something more than hardwork...a four letter word commonly called as LUCK

    6) :)

  114. sir i am interested in the dual programme offered at bits
i would like to know about the subject combinations which could supplement each other
    ReplyDelete
  115. @jyothsna : The fact is every science degree gels properly with any engineering degree though some combinations are more preferred

Economics goes well with all engineering degrees
    Physics with EEE/EIE/Mech
    Maths with CompSci
Chemistry and Bio with all degrees
