BITSAT 2009 expected cutoff



There have been many speculations about the expected cutoffs for BITSAT 2009.

According to me there are two factors that are going to affect the cutoff of BITSAT 2009.

1 - Hyderabad Campus : In its first year itself the new Hyderabad campus gave a tough fight to Goa campus...mainly because of the preference of Hyderabad campus over Goa by the Andhra Pradesh students...This year Hyderabad campus enters into its second year...after the initial glitches the campus is ready for a new batch of students...more prepared this time..but the construction work will still go on( first and second year labs are ready) ...so dont expect a lot but this campus will surely turn into one of the best engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh

2 - The New IIT campuses : Though the infra structure for the new IIT's is not in place( blame it on the government) many people will choose an IIT for its tag...And moreover the new IIT's are also in their second year so it might affect the other exams cutoff

But the two things should weigh out each other and the cutoffs according to me will not be affected a lot...it is expected to remain same or increase slightly unless the IIT factor plays a major role

I maybe wrong at the end of the fifth iteration but I am mostly good at such stupid analysis :) ..I hope I am correct a again

  1. this is my personal opinion.it may be wrong.one shud give more weightage to the increment of iit seats + enhancement of obc quota to 18 % and 27% in the old and new iits respectively. this means students wid less relative merit wud now go in iits and good nits.(these obc students will not get any reservation in bits,and even if dey perform equally in bitsat/jee/aieee,they get better chances in nits and the new iits). this may cause bits cut offs to fall in the later iterations as a major section of applicants belong to obc category.

  2. I am scoring only 250 which means I would get biological sciences at BITS Goa. If the cutoff dips I might expect Msc in Chem. Can I change my course if I perform well in the first yr? Is it worth a shot? What are the oppurtunities if I take biological sc.

  3. i think that the increase in number of seats in iit will have an effect on cut offs,many students thinking for bits may prefer iit over it........well i pray that the cut off should be such that i should be able to make it to bits....around 270 for msc.

  4. THere's a lot of difference between 2007 and 2008 cutoff's.. which is more likely to be like 2009 cutoff? Also, you didn't take population into account. Every year, more students give all these exams.

  5. Vishal again....2008 bitsat cutoff in pilani wasn't different much from 2007, but it dropped a lot in goa...why so? Maybe it's because of Hyderabad. And which is better Goa or hyderabad. (i'm from delhi).

  6. Hey everybody...i'm a first year student at SVNIT. I was getting mech. at BITS goa, but chose comp. science in svnit instead (state quota). Just want to tell everybody that BITS Goa is an average institution, but with the name BITS attached to it. The faculty, placements etc. are way behind most NIT's. But the infrastructure is quite new and good. But choos carefully, remember don;t get attracted to an institution by its glamour factor (like just because it's in goa, it'll be fun, or just because it's in delhi, it'll be cool...) Once you reach a college, you realise there's much more than that. NIT's seem humble, but are excellent (most of them). They are highly recognized outside india, with a huge alumni. And the best part is, if there's a good NIT in your home state, you'll get a good seat, (though you don't deserve it!!). Same with Pilani. So think before you jump, wherever you go.

    @Ankit : I would like to disagree with you...Goa may not have good placements(faculty according to me is good)...but check the number of MS/MBA qualified guys in their first year itself...Its is way better than most NIT's and for the alumni and reputation and higher studies factor BITS is way ahead of any NIT you can name...
    Please dont turn this blog into a BITS vs NIT thing....I have done loads of such discussions on many forums and I win every time :)

    You will have a lot more in BITS than any NIT apart from the placement and higher studies...

    Since people are talking here about placements, i would like to put in my two cents(or less).
    I have observed people take up any branch they get in any of the good iits just because of the promise and attraction of the brand name of IIT.Even some coaching class teachers endorse it(Mine did)
    But I seriously doubt that such people would be happy in their professional life doing something that was forced upon them.Isnt it better to choose the stream you love in a good college rather than any branch in the iits?
    After all money is not everything in life and IITs are not the Promised Land.

  16. my thought process ven it comes to choosin betn nits and bpgc is dat the degree is common for goa & pilani & der is no profound mention of campus(hopefully ,i m not sure)
    thus if sum1 chooses to go for higher studies insted of getin placed after ug, BITS-PILANI
    wud possibly read better than NIT (except for trichy & maybe warangal)in the resume.

  17. @Anonymous : Dont think so..the chemical cutoff in Pilani never went below 305...if cutoffs go down by 8-9 marks you have a chance...anyways try for duals or engg in other campuses

    @led : Your pay when you pass out is nothing...you earn a lot more with higher studies...anyways I say NIT's have better placements coz many Public Sector Undertaking companies opt for placements(semi government)...the scope for personal development in such companies is less

    Apart from that the top NIT's have decent placements in field work based jobs like in mech and chemical jobs...

    BITSians on the other hand rely less on their initial placement...most are interested in Higher studies and I am sure NIT's dont stand a chance in front of BITS

    @Mathews : Mostly no...you will get dual degrees...read the post on dual degrees before taking any decision

    @Debjit : All bits campuses get the same degree - BITS-Pilani

    Ex: BITS-Pilani , Goa campus...what matters is the degree for higher studies(MS/MBA)

    Nope for higher studies I dont think NIT's can give a tuff fight to BITS

    i have secured 243 marks in bitsat 2009 (quite disappointed cuz i ws backing myself fr a much better performance)...looking at the cutoffs of last yr, i m hopeful of getting b.pharm at pilani n hyderabad...my query is, if i do take b.pharm(hons), is there any scope for me to try n change my B.E subject (to say civil or sumthing)in the 2nd yr based on my performance in the 1st yr???

    @rahul : ya you can but it is next to impossible....around 10 out of 800 get such transfers and it is very very very tough....what are your other options??

    @Anonymous : For maths 290+...safe score 300+

    @Anonymous with 328 : Mostly no...the cutoffs for Pilani campus EEE and EIE might not go below 330...try for Electronics in other campuses...dont keep any negative perceptions about Goa Campus in your mind...

    suppose in a hypothetical situation....he takes b pharma in pilani campus...n gets a gpa 9.5 in the first year....so ideally he is entitled for a branch change,..suppose he takes civil...

    does dat mean he leaves b pharma n gets completely transferred to civil???

    also is the same procedure applicable for msc hons.?? ie....i take msc. hons in first year n den secures a great gpa...den can i take civil or ne other branch n leave msc. hons altogether???

    Suppose I take up MSc Economics in the first year and get a 8.0 + GPA in the First year, then will I be eligible for ECE?

    THe reason I am asking this is - there should be a fixed number of EEE/ECE/CS seats in every Campus, so when the intake has reached the limit, how will the person with a high GPA in the first year have the vacancy to take up other Branch?
    Thats one.

    THe other query is - I would like to have a Dual Degree, and I am confident that I would get a 8.0 + in my first year. So what is the best approach that you can suggest so that I get a Dual Degree.

  38. @sam : Any person with a very very good cgpa(say 9.5+) can opt for a transfer to a degree of his choice irrespective of his original degree..

    @302: Tuff luck....cant say

    @vipul : Better than NIT's and DCE anyday...comparable to IIT's...we have some strong points compared to IIT's...though the research quotient is more among the IITians

    @sharat: CGPA is a relative grading...so there is no chance that all guys get a cgpa above 8 :)

    There is no fixed cutoff for dual degrees...it is rough idea that if you cross 8 you will get an engineering dual of your choice for sure....that has been the trend...And dont be over confident bro...getting 8 is not that easy.....you will realise that once you come to the campus

    although i would be easily getting a regional college through the eee exam at my home town.
    but i am determined to study at bits.
    ece & eee & cs are the three branches of my interest....

    @sharath : I have seen many guys like you...just claim to get cgpa of 8 easily....you will understand how toigh or how easy it is to get a CGPA of 8

    SO here is your answer

    CGPA - Cumulative Grade Point average in BITS is a relative grading system in which you are given grades for every course....We have 5 letter grades for every course namely A,B,C,D,E

    Where A = 10 , B = 8 , C = 6 ,D = 4 ,E =2

    If you are close to the average marks in any course you normally get a C

    Every course has units associated with it - generally it is 3 units

    So CGPA = summation(units * grade) / total units

    Example you do 5 three units courses and one 4 units courses...and you make grades A,A,B,B,C,C

    Your cgpa = 3*10+ 3*10 + 3*8 + 3*8 + 3*6 + 4*6/19 = 7.9

    But the point being in every course avergae is given a C so in most cases only few students make A and B 's ...only if you make all B's minimum you cross a cgpa of 8

    So it is not that easy...many first yearites think education in BITS is similar to their 12 class...only when they see the competition they realise how tough it is

    In short over confidence kills

  55. is it true bits exam become tough as time passes and is there a large difference between bits maths and 12 th board maths and also in AIEEE i was not able to get time to solve even try al questions how can it be possible to attempt 150 questions in 180 mins or the questions will be direct one just a trick and questin is solved as Chemistry in AIEEE

    @274 : Everyone gets a dual ...but the dual engineering degree you get depends on your performance in first year...you shld get Maths dual mostly....but pray to god that you get it :)

    @mock test 300 : Arrihant tests are easy...you need to improve a lot...concentrate on your mistakes

    @Anonymous : Read the post on Myths about BITSAT for your first question answer....The questions are not as lenghty as AIEEE...time will be sufficient if you plan properly

    @mtg papers : good score keep working...Your final BITSAT paper maybe a bit tougher...so work hard and concentrate on your mistakes

  72. Sir, I have to appear for BITSAT exam on 8th june. I want to know if the exam gets tougher as the dates pass (or so I have heard)... Also, I want to know, what should be the approach towards the preparation if I am aiming for Pilani/Goa campus... As in, how much of theory/numerical?

    Also, is the exam AIEEE level or tougher or easier? And should I prepare more of class 11 and 12 or continue solving AIEEE level books?? Please help! It is the only exam I have been banking on. :)

    Goa guys are very good...the campus is developing into one of the best engineering/science college in India...you have ample research opportunities and many guys good MS/MBA from there...
    M.Sc.(tech) Information Systems is same as IT engineering outside except that yhou dont get an engineering degree but a sciences degree...the placements are good for that degree comparable to Computer Science

  89. Hey guys I am a NITian and completed my Masters, from MIT. First thing , NITs are good institutes and are known here in US also. So those who say NITs arent good , i would say check your numbers again. IIT's are way up there.. completely in a different league.. Even Pilani Campus cannot compete any IIT .. even guwahati. IIT brand is untouchable. Pilani campus is good.. so prefer Pilani over NITs.. branch choice also matters... Goa and hyderabad... dont have much idea.. Just want to tell Institute matters.. but branch matters more and more your interest.

    As for Pilani vs IIT even I would agree that IIT's are ahead but if at all there is any institution that can compete with them then it is surely BITS...As for Guwahati I know how good or bad it is...BITSians have as good placements and higher studies opportunities as some IIT's....Want the numbers visit bits360.com....has some great discussions on BITS vs other colleges

    Field-wise i'd say i'm interested in EEE, CS, Mech, Eni...but i hear the coursework in EEE is very hectic and demanding. But does the Pilani campus have any of the proverbial 'brand value'?

  111. I am a BITSIAN and I know how good Pilani is. In fact in the first ever India Today rankings Pilani was ahead of many IITs (mind you there were only 5 IITs at that time and Roorkee was not an IIT.

    India Today dropped BITS due to court case (stil on) and unfortunately, BITS is fighting for its status with newer generation.

    Well IITs today are far better, but no NIT can be better than BITS. Its just proximity, which drives parents to choose nearest NIT over BITS.

    Well despite knowing all about BITS, I am not sure if my son, who appeared in BITSAT 2009 will get in Pilani or not. He got 285 and I am keen on Msc (Eco). I wish he makes it to Pilani. I prefer Pilani over Goa.

But Pilani and Goa the debate continues...but for higher studies both campus guys had equal opportunities...Goa has improved a lot and will be one of the best engineering colleges in future.... Being a guy from Pilani campus I might advice prefer Pilani but that notion of mine has changed seeing the success of many of my friends @ Goa campus

    If it is only M.Sc. Eco then it is tough to get in Pilani campus but that cutoff may change... If it doesn't go for Goa campus

  117. hi bhaiya... sum inputs needed regarding dual degree from u .... i ve got 281 in bitsat... can i be sure of a dual degree msc(finance) or msc(physics) at pilani campus (any1 will do)... also is the the engg degree awarded in the Msc Hons prog same as those who do just BE... if yes then what makes such a huge difference in cut-offs of both... and is there any disparity during placements btween a mech engg from dual course and a single degree course?? which gets the prefence, if any? also im interested in mech engg... what is the aprox gpa i must get at the end of first yr?? also u've mentioned that the 5th yr is only meant for internship and all the study part of both degree ends in the fourth yr itself... now i need a reassurance from u if there's absolutely internship in 5th yr or not?? thnx...

  122. @Ayan : M.Sc (tech) degrees are different from M.Sc.(Hons) degree...check the post on difference between dual and transfer before reading this comment

    There is no difference...Infact dual degrees guys are preferred for placements and internship(PS 2)..approx CGPA is around 7

    And ya 100% assured...I am doing my one year intern starting from July 1 with a stipend of 20k(stipend not my pay...I am not yet placed :) )

    @280 : Read the posts on dual degrees...you shld get duals or else go for engineering

    @Debjit : Manufacturing Engineering is a specialization in mechanical engineering and is very good...but I cant guarantee the future of this course though it is expected to be good and will be thought by very good profs :)

    neways check it with a margin of (+-)10 marks
    for aieee chek urprojected rank at ankur gupta's blog and then visit the ccb.ac.in site to check
    last year branch wise cutoff
    iiser is good for research(msc. & bsc.)
    iist has 152 seats and very improbable to get wid an eml
    iist means direct placement to isro so do fill out the form 0n 4 june

    If you want a good branch go for Hyd campus

    Civil @ BITS is good but placements for degrees like Civil and Chemical are not as good as other degrees like CompSci

    ISM Dhanbad better than BITS Hyd obviously...Hyd is a new campus so will take time....but for higher studies both colleges are good

    Secondly i want to ask from where do the seats come for dual. Bits gives admission in engineering degrees upfront are any seats specifically for those who opt for duals or what. If you could give the number of seats available per branch for duals.

    There were two batches of placements in BITS Goa

    Placements take place in both sems in BITS unlike IIT's or NIT's

    First batch it was not good though in second sem it was better

    Second batch first sem it was tooo good...on par with Pilani

    But second sem recession began and every college has been sucked into it...

    Dont worry guys when you are ready to pass out you will have the best job climate

    @319 : NIT's in south are good but you should be getting CompSci @ Goa...why dont you consider that...anyways it is very very tough to do engineering and side by side study again for JEE...it is a simple wastage of time studying for JEE when you can spend that time doing something more constructive and improving your future prospects

    @pooja : Obviously Goa is preferable over Hyd..and ya better than most NIT and for other comparisons depends on the branch you get

    @siddhant: Mostly Bio..the cutoffs may increase

    @297 : EML doesnt matter...join BITS :)

    2)BITS offers all courses to only PCM guys :)...so it doesnt matter when so many guys have done it

  186. @phils : It is tough to predict the border cutoffs especially with a new campus like Hyd...I cannot 100% say you can get BioSci in Hyd...but you have a good chance...Pilani mostly no chance...

    A CGPA of 7.5+ for EEE dual

    You must always go for the preferred degrees in first and at the last the degrees you are expecting

    @sudhir : Maybe B.Pharm...if very lucky Bio @ Hyd

  189. @279 : Only MPC guys are allowed in BITS..so dont worry :)

    @B.Pharma Placements : The placement scenario is not that good....primarily because the placements for B.Pharm are not good...one must do an M.Pharm to get a good placement....

    Anyways it is not advisable to join B.Pharm if only you are aiming for a good placement....for higher studies though BITS degree is very useful..

  191. bhaiya I am expecting the cut off to decrease for Bits pilani - Pilani campus due to the following reasons -
    1)South Indians would prefer hyd\goa over Pilani
    2)Since now goa is at par with pilani people may prefer it since it is well placed
    3)My friends and teacers say that this year students are scoring a bit low
    4)Since a new branch "manufacturing" is also being opened in Pilani
    Hiamanshu - I am getting 277 , I desperately want Pilani , am I assured of msc Bio there??

    @Himanshu : Simple example...if there are atleast 30 to 40 people like you then the cutoff for Pilani will surely increase...anyways your negative notion about Goa campus will screw up your future...You must visit www.bits360.com/forum to make more sense and go for other options in other campuses

    This is Rishabh (285 in BITSAT).... Okay now since all the results are out there is a lot of speculation going round and there are a lot of rumors doing the rounds also....
    So as you have done b4 i request you to quash some of them...

    1) I noe the cut offs will increase but at the max 6-8 marks....So do I have a shot at Pilani campus??

    2) What in ur opinion the no. of iterations it will take me to get into MSc. at pilani? I am dead sure I'll be in the waitlist in the first iteration....

    3) Now the rumors....
    a) At the end of a dual degree, we get two certificates right?? Or as the rumor goes that we get one integrated certi and thus there is a need of co-relation b/w the Msc and the BE.

    I was irritated with this one and request you to clear this doubt ASAP!

    I hate ppl with a propaganda... just coz they made a mistake in the iterations and were not patient enough, they start these rumors I don't know to fulfill which vile sentiment!!!


    I know its a silly post but i guess you guys are the best ppl to ask and confirm.

    2) Second iteration..worst case third
    3) a) You get an integrated cert but it doesnt make much difference....

    Though combination's of duals and engineering are desired it doesnt make difference if there are some odd degrees....coz any science degree always helps in the engineering you do...Your engineering degree will always work as an independent degree....dont worry....And science degree either acts as a stimulus or remains neutral in your quest for further studies
