Some sensible things to do before choosing your college



Lately I have seen many guys talking about BITS vs XYZ colleges... I dont give a damn about any college even IIT's simply because I have always wanted to be a BITSian....been a BITSian and will always cherish my life @ BITS

There was so much more @ BITS other than studying.

Anyways my argument wont make sense unless you ever become a BITSian but to make more sense while choosing your college these are things you must follow


  • Dont listen to idiots - let it be your parents friends who are hell bent on forcing their useless notions on you or the so called senior who has done great at that college and never talks about the average bunch of students - the average is important not the top guys
  • Secondly check out what the alumni is doing - how active they are - where they are - what opportunities do they get and I am sure no NIT can even talk about a strong alumni.For BITSian alumni related info do check the links below

  • Opportunities for higher studies - where the guys are getting admissions - are they getting any aid?? Does the university recognize your college???

  • The Placements - People always have a wrong notion about Placements....many think that they can have a good life with their initial placements.... but it is not the case... you always need to go for higher studies...Some things to note about placementsHow good are the placements...What are the companies that come for placements....what are the packages...What kind of work the students get in the company...how fast can we grow in the company....what are the off campus opportunities....what are the relations with the industries - BITS has a separate internship programme in which BITSian work in industry and research organization as part of their course - It is called as Practice School.Do check the links below

  • Campus Life - The campus life @ BITS is quite different and exciting compared to other colleges - No compulsory attendance - the most number of departments and clubs...one of the best technical and cultural festivals ...     first of all thank you for this super amazing post.there couldnt have been a better time to post this.i got a 294 in BITSAT and might just make it to mech/ENI in goa....what i want to know is if goa is at par with pilani campus in terms of placements/faculty,etc...also once we pass out is it specifically mentioned in our degree which campus we have passed out from....also can u plz tell me when i can know for certain where i'm being offered admission and also when i can g8 a rough idea of the present year's trends for cut-offs...thank you

  5. @devendra : Goa is on par with Pilani...by the time you pass out Goa will be one of the best college foe engineering in India

    Ya it is mentioned but how does it matter?? What matters is the degree which is BITS-Pilani

    Ex: BITS-Pilani,Pilani Campus ; BITS-Pilani,Goa Campus

    Mostly Mech @ Goa

  10. Hi, I m Saumya Choudhary & I secured a very humble 298 in bitsat 2009, I got 4319 AIR in aieee & 5228 in iitjee. What do u think I must go for & if it is bits then wat r the chances I stand at the Pilani campus(including duals)? Als0, what do u think abt nit allahabad ECE?

  11. @Rishav : You should be getting good engineering @ Goa...go for it...or else if you get good engineering @ IT-BHU go for it

    Also if interested to work hard for one more year go for Pilani dual ...you should be getting any dual degree of your choice ...work hard for one more year and get a good engineering degree as dual

  14. hi, i've read all d posts and comments but i still have a doubt; if i opt 4 dual degree and get a gpa of 8.5+ in d 1st yr it is not like i've 2 take comp sci only riit?? i can choose mech also riit? also, which msc is most suitable for mech, i want 2 enter into research.

    i got an AIR 6399 in AIEEE which might take me to BITS mesra in all probability.
    what i want to know is does BITS mesra provide the same tag as BITS pilani,goa and all.also is it a b8r option than BITS goa?(i got 294 in BITSAT)

    is m.sc biological sciences in pilani campus a good option? or m.sc phy/maths/economics in goa or hyd campus is a better option?
    priority to campus or course?
    would m.sc bio be suitable for a MPC student?
    and doesn't it look odd if one graduates with m.sc bio & B.E. comp. sci.?

  18. @vijay : You can go for Mech if you are interested in it...there was a girl who had a CGPA of 9.2 after first year but she choose B.Pharm as dual as she was very much interested in that degree

    @Anonymous : IT-BHU will obviously be a sensible choice....but why are you so concerned about Civil???? Go for duals @ Pilani or Goa if you are desperate about a BITS degree

    @devendra : BIT MIsra and not BIT'S'...anyways it is not related to BITS.....it is nowhere compared to BITS though many irresponsible rankings rate it above many good NIT's

    @ashwin : Course or Campus a tough decision....one must go with the course according to me...
    Only MPC guys are allowed in BITS so dont worry
    Why is it odd?? Ever heard of MS in Bio-Informatics???

  22. how do i mention reason for drop year then? my actual ques is that as i didn't mention the reason in application form of exam shud i do it now?if so,how ? many of my friends wrote reasons at the back of form while applying for bitsat in january.

  24. I share the same problem as mayank....i dropped a year and did not know that we had to provide a reason as to why we dropped a year....i scored 356 and have not applied yet....will i face any problems?

  25. @vijay : They say Physics...but one mus always prefer Eco above any other dual degrees

    @mayank : Do it now...write it in a separate plain sheet...the reason should be as simple as not qualified in any other exam...so repeated an extra year

    @Ashu : Pilani tag...but for Pilani tag be prepared to work hard and get a good engineering degree...else the Pilani tag is not worth a good engineering @ goa

    It depends on your interests - whether you want a core/technical job (ms after BE) or a management level job (MBA after BE)

    What do you want to do Engg or Med?
    If engg then you will get good branches in bits goa/hyderabad campus.I have a friend in DAIICT who tells me that it is quite good.Now it depends on you -whether you want to go out of your home state or not.
    If yes then bits is the best option if you can get the branch you want because it is the only one with the so called 'Brand name'.

    And there is nothing great about bitsat papers . It is just that the format is different.Just study from books written for AIEEE or NCERT books and you will be fine.Hope that you make it to BITS.

    All what matters is the engineering dual you get after first year... The pure M.Sc. degrees are mostly for research.. But you have the engineering degree so there is no difference between you and the other guy who has done only engineering... You have equal if not better opportunities

  43. well all the 3 are equivalent.. just see which one is closer to your place! if u live in north den go for thapar but of its really expensive as compared to most oder coleges in india with the yearly fee being close to 2.5 lakh(dont go by previous stats,its been inc dis yr) !!
