FAQ : Extra 12 questions in Bitsat,Should we attempt them?

Bitsat is different from other entrance examinations like IIT JEE,AIEEE,EAMCET etc in many ways,the extra 12 questions being one of them.Every student writing Bitsat will be in a dillema whether to go for the extra 12 questions or should he just leave them and stay away from risk.Different people who have given a shot at Bitsat for the past 4 years have given different theories about these extra 12 questions.Some say it is the easiest part of the part while some say they took an unnecessary risk and stuck up with a lower Bitsat score.

So what is the funda of these extra 12 questions.Here is my complete explanation about the "EXTRA 12"

This is what is given in the brochure about the extra 12 - "If a candidate answers all the 150 questions (without skipping any question), the candidate will have an option of attempting 12 (twelve) extra questions, if there is still time left. These extra questions will be from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics only; four questions from each part. Further, once the candidate has opted for extra questions, he cannot go back for correction of any of the earlier answered 150 questions."

  • No you are not given any extra time to answer these questions
  • Yes, you need to attempt all 150 questions...You cannot leave any question blank
  • No you cannot go back any change any of your answers
  • Only Maths,Physics,Chemistry

So when to attempt the extra 12 questions:

  • You have atleast 20 minutes left.
  • You are sure about atleast 135 questions...by sure I mean you have given a shot at the questions and by some technique or method or on the basis of your memory you have confidently attempted 135 questions
  • You believe that you are lucky most of the time in guessing the correct answers(I am talking about the 15 questions you have to guess to complete 150)
  • There arent any method/formula based lenghty problems left in the paper...here I am talking specially about Maths...say you have a lenghty problem from calculus...you dont just guess it...if you have time you solve it and only then think of these extra questions.
  • If there are any memory based questions which you cant solve you can guess them and go for the extra 12.
  • This extra 12 questions according to BITS should be bit tuffer....On the other hand almost every Bitsian who has got a score of 350+( very good chance of getting a Computer Science or EEE degree) claim to have attempted these extra 12 questions and found them to be quite easy.

P.S:I have been very busy with my assignments,tests,projects and hell amount of academic stuff apart from the cricket matches,the movies,the oscars,outing with friends and loads of other stuff and for this reason I could not update the blog regularly.Till the mid of March I have a tight schedule and would not be able to update the blog regularly.Inspite of this tight schedule I will try my best to reply to your doubts within 24 hours :)

When to Choose your Bitsat exam date - reserve Bitsat Test dates

Please login here to give your preference for test date and check your test centre allotment but before that do read this post

There is lot of speculation and wrong notion about the ideal time to take the Bitsat exam.

You might get different advices from every person who thinks himself to be a master of judging when there is going to be the easiest Bitsat exam paper(relatively easier).Remember that Bitsat exam spreads over a month ( starts on 9 May and ends on 12 June) and considering the randomness of questions generated from the question bank any day is good to write the exam.

You write the exam when you are most comfortable.Your final marks don't depend on your exam date rather on your level of preparation.

Ideally this time would be when you don't have any other exams around and you have ample time to spend on those topics which are specific for Bitsat.But if you keep it too late you might not have enough determination to study and if it is too early you might not have sufficient time to prepare.

Ask for my piece of advise it should be some where at the end of May so that you can get to know about the current level of questions,practice decently attempting as many online tests as possible(you can get some here Get Free BITSAT Sample Papers - Click Here ) and reading those extra topics which might be crucial in increasing your score at the end.

You can book your Bitsat date from 18th February – 10th March 09 here

Link to check your status of Bitsat Application form

Here is the direct link to check if your application has reached to Bits or not and to check your test centre allotment Click here.

You need to have the details of the candidates application number,his/her birthday.

This post is just a short notice...will update the blog with new posts as soon as possible :)

Dual Degree in Bits Pilani, How is it different

People are often confused that duals in Bits-Pilani are same as duals in other engineering colleges. There is hell amount of difference.

  • To start with the Duals degrees are mostly M.Sc(Hons) degrees...i.e. they are Science degrees and are not engineering dual degrees like M.Tech(i.e. B.Tech + M.Tech).
  • After the completion of your first year you will be given a dual degree in an engineering stream depending on his/her performance in first year . For example if a guy joins in M.Sc.(Hons) Mathematics and after first year he cant get any dual in a engineering stream like EEE,EIE,CSE i mean any branch.
  • All students irrespective of the degree they join in the campus do the same courses in first year(except C group).
  • The whole point is a Science degree with an Engineering degree to give a great scope for Interdisciplinary research.
  • This figure shows all the possible ways of a Science dual with an engineering dual.
  • The Science and Engineering degrees are themselves recognized and the engineering degree you get through dual degree scheme is in no way different from the normal engineering degree.
  • Though dual degree is for 5 years you spend your final year(i.e. 5th year) in a company doing your internship with decent pay or you have an option to do a thesis which is very helpful for getting admission into better colleges for MS.
  • Apart from that you can do an engineering dual i.e. one engineering dual with another.There are people in the campus who are doing Computer science with EEE dual and they pass out in 5 years.
Advantages of dual degrees:

  • At the end of 5 years you get two degrees along with a Masters degree in Science.
  • The Science degree courses are in no way related to the Engineering degree courses except for few courses which are common for every student irrespective of his/her degree.So you can portray yourself as a Masters in Science or just as an Engineer or both.
  • A dual degree means a study of two different fields so it helps a lot for higher studies where interdisciplinary research is given lot of importance.
  • You spend your final year doing internship in companies ranging from Microsoft,yahoo to even Common wealth games(Click here for the complete list of companies),which means you dont waste your final year.And in many cases this final year internship is considered as work experience and students normally get placed in that company ( Which company will leave a student after giving them one year of training/work experience).
  • If your aim is to get a good engineering degree even with low Bitsat score dual degree is the best option.
Disadvantages of Dual degree:
  • The pressure to get a good dual degree is high as there is huge competition(Every person who comes to Bits is a good student in his/her school so obviously the level of competition is high).
  • The number of students given dual in a particular engineering degree is around 40.For example the number of students with Computer Science dual is around40,With EEE dual is around 40 and so on.Here comes the problem.The total number of students in all Science degrees is close to 200 so it may happen that if you dont study in your first year you end up with very bad dual degrees(bad is a relative term and itz usage depends on the context and the person we are referring to ). For example people who dont study at all with CGPA<5>.A word of caution if you want to enjoy your first year(by enjoy I mean 24*7 enjoy zero studying) then you must not think of duals unless you are prepared for the consequences.
  • You have to complete 2 degrees in 5 years so itz sometimes hectic.But you have only 6 courses structured every sem irrespective of your discipline.
  • You have a placement option of only one week(coz you will be doing your intern) while engineering group people stay on the campus complete sem for their placements...many dualites do a thesis on campus rather than intern so that they can stay for placements the whole sem..also many dualites get their jobs during their internship(PS-2)
Here is the course structure of M.Sc(Hons) Mathematics with B.E.(Hons) Computer Science:

Compare this with the normal Computer Science engineering degree obtained from Bits

BITSAT - A detailed information about the entrance examination

Q1: How is Bitsat different from other competitive examinations?

BITSAT is an online entrance test for getting admission into one of the campuses of the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science(BITS-Pilani).As such there is not much difference between Bitsat and other engineering entrance examinations except that you take your test on a computer.The most important thing while writing an online exam is having high concentration levels for the whole of three hours as most of you are not used to working on a computer for 3 continuous hours.

Q2: What is the question paper pattern of Bitsat??Is there any negative marking in Bitsat??

BITSAT has 150 questions which is divided into the following components

* 45 - Mathematics
* 40 - Physics
* 40 - Chemistry
* 25 - English and Logical Reasoning

Every correct answer gives +3 marks and every negative answer -1 marks (or +3 / -1 scheme).

Note: If you attempt all 150 questions then you can attempt extra 12 questions which are supposed to be tough within the same time span of 3 hours.No extra time will be given.

Q3: Is it advisable to attempt this extra 12 questions in Bitsat???

If you complete your exam within 2 and half hours and are left with few questions unattempted say around 15 out of 150 then you can risk to attempt those extra 12 questions within 30 minutes.If you dont have time left then it is not worth the risk.The better option would be to try to attempt the questions left out or checking for errors in the attempted questions(Normally people dont have time for this).Many times people who attempt the extra 12 questions end with a very good score.
