Some sensible things to do before choosing your college

Lately I have seen many guys talking about BITS vs XYZ colleges... I dont give a damn about any college even IIT's simply because I have always wanted to be a BITSian....been a BITSian and will always cherish my life @ BITS

There was so much more @ BITS other than studying.

Anyways my argument wont make sense unless you ever become a BITSian but to make more sense while choosing your college these are things you must follow

  • Dont listen to idiots - let it be your parents friends who are hell bent on forcing their useless notions on you or the so called senior who has done great at that college and never talks about the average bunch of students - the average is important not the top guys
  • Secondly check out what the alumni is doing - how active they are - where they are - what opportunities do they get and I am sure no NIT can even talk about a strong alumni. For BITSian alumni related info do check the links below
  1. www.bitsaa.org
  2. newsletter.bitsaa.org
  3. sandpaper.bitsaa.org

  • Opportunities for higher studies - where the guys are getting admissions - are they getting any aid?? Does the university recognize your college???

  • The Placements - People always have a wrong notion about Placements....many think that they can have a good life with their initial placements.... but it is not the case... you always need to go for higher studies...Some things to note about placementsHow good are the placements...What are the companies that come for placements....what are the packages...What kind of work the students get in the company...how fast can we grow in the company....what are the off campus opportunities....what are the relations with the industries - BITS has a separate internship programme in which BITSian work in industry and research organization as part of their course - It is called as Practice School.Do check the links below
  1. Placements 2009 Pilani Campus - (recession effect) - Click Here
  2. Companies that visited Pilani Campus in last 2 years - Click Here
  3. Industrial linkages of BITS - List of PS-2 companies - Click Here
  • Campus Life - The campus life @ BITS is quite different and exciting compared to other colleges - No compulsory attendance - the most number of departments and clubs...one of the best technical and cultural festivals ... BITS stands on top...though there are some drawaback with Pilani campus :)..the most important one being no close by city...Do check the links below about our tech fest and cul fest
  1. APOGEE - Tech Fest Pilani Campus
  2. Quark - Tech Fest Goa Campus
  3. Oasis - Cultural Fest Pilani Campus
  4. Waves - Cultural Fest Goa Campus
And finally do check the stastics link - It is a combined link for all the BITS campuses

Difference between Duals and Trasnfer at BITS

I have seen many people getting confused between dual degrees and transfers. So here is a post to clear all your doubts. Please check this link before reading this article - Doubts about Dual Degree - Click Here

  • What are different types of duals? What kind of dual is it if we take M.Sc.(hons) degree?
There are two types of duals - One is the dual under first priority and the second dual in other priority .

Under first priority you get a dual in Engineering / B.Pharm compulsorily . The dual you get depends on your performance in first year.

For example for CompSci dual in Pilani the cutoff CGPA(performance in first year on a 10 scale) is around 7.8/10 . Civil the cutoff is sround 5/10 .
Even if you perform badly you get a dual - worst case B.Pharm dual.

The good thing about Goa campus is they dont have B.Pharm and Civil engineering...so worst case you get Chemical Dual :)

The M.Sc. (hons) duals fall under the category of first priority.

The second is duals under other categories - You need very good CGPA to get a dual under other categories. The CGPA should be 9+ for an engineering dual and 8.5+ for an M.Sc. (hons) dual

Ya you read it right - you can take an M.Sc. ( hons) dual irrespective your first degree

Some known dual degrees under other priorities in campus
  • B.E. Mech + B.E. CompSci - Ex : The guy joined with Mech took CompSci as dual after first year with a CGPA around 9.5
  • B.E. Mech + B.E. EEE -
  • B.E. EEE + B.E. CompSci
  • M.Sc.(hons) Mathematics + M.Sc.(hons) Physics
  • B.E. CompSci + M.Sc. (hons) Mathematics
  • B.E. EEE + M.Sc. (hons) Physics
  • M.Sc.(hons) Physics + M.Sc.(hons) Mathematics

  • What is this transfer to other degree?
Every person does the same course in first year irrespective of the degree with which he joins. So based on your performance in first year irrespective of what degree you are in you can get a transfer of your choice. The cutoffs CGPA's are very high.Around 10 students get a transfer to the degree of theri choice.

To explain in detail whether you join with B.Pharm or with Chemical Engineering or an M.Sc.(hons) Mathematics or M.Sc. ( hons) Biology if you cross a CGPA of 9.5 you can get a transfer to the degree of your choice.

  • Is this transfer tough?
Ya it is very very tough - You need to compete with hunderds of guys of same calibre or more than you and you have to be among the toppers of that batch - It is tough and requires lot of hard work and mental determination . Dont jojn BITS with some degree hoping to get a transfer. Only few do it and you may not be among that few.

  • What is this dual degree transfer??
Ok I forgot there is another kind of transfer - Thanks to killer kiran I am editing this post :)

An M.Sc.(hons) guy can get a transfer to another M.Sc. (hons) degree after first year . This transfer is not directly based on your CGPA but on the engineering degree you obtain after first year.

Say I join with M.Sc.(hons) Biology and then based on my CGPA i get a dual in B.E. Computer Science . Then I can opt for a transfer to M.Sc.(hons) Mathematics

My final degree would be M.Sc.(hons) Mathematics with B.E. (hons) Computer Science

If you get a CompSci dual you can transfer easily to Mathematics and if you get EEE dual you can easily transfer to Physics

Transfer to Economics is based purely on CGPA...the one with higher CGPA among those who applied will get the transfer

  • Is dual possible with M.Sc(tech) Information Systems and M.Sc(tech) Finance. How is it different from M.Sc.(Hons) degrees?
Ya it is possible but these duals unlike M.Sc.(hons) will be duals under other priority and require a very good CGPA . You are not gauranteed a dual if you take M.Sc.(tech) degrees .
Only for M.Sc(Hons) degrees you are gauranteed an engineering/b.pharm dual

Any other doubts post them here but please read the complete article and only then post. All irrelevant comments will not be entertained.

P.S : I have been kind of rude lately with my replies but you guys must understand that it is a tough process to reply to every question. i am very much irritated when people without reading other articles just want me to act as their BITSAT branch predictor/campus predictor. Please read the articles... Dont put vague questions...ask genuine questions...Even if they are lenghty I try to answer it.

P.P.S : Thanks to all your wishes I have got my PS 2 @ Qualcomm Hyderabad .

BITSAT 2009 expected cutoff

There have been many speculations about the expected cutoffs for BITSAT 2009.
Please check the post on BITSAT 2008 cutoff - Click Here and use it as a reference for this post.

According to me there are two factors that are going to affect the cutoff of BITSAT 2009.

1 - Hyderabad Campus : In its first year itself the new Hyderabad campus gave a tough fight to Goa campus...mainly because of the preference of Hyderabad campus over Goa by the
Andhra Pradesh students...This year Hyderabad campus enters into its second year...after the initial glitches the campus is ready for a new batch of students...more prepared this time..but the construction work will still go on( first and second year labs are ready) ...so dont expect a lot but this campus will surely turn into one of the best engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh

2 - The New IIT campuses : Though the infra structure for the new IIT's is not in place( blame it on the government) many people will choose an IIT for its tag...And moreover the new IIT's are also in their second year so it might affect the other exams cutoff

But the two things should weigh out each other and the cutoffs according to me will not be affected a lot...it is expected to remain same or increase slightly unless the IIT factor plays a major role

I maybe wrong at the end of the fifth iteration but I am mostly good at such stupid analysis :) ..I hope I am correct a again

Any other comments are welcome

Doubts about Dual degree - Part 2

This is part of the dual degree doubts clarification - Please read the first post on dual degree before reading this article - Click her for the first post on dual degree

The post will be in an interactive manner....i will be updating this post when I receive new doubts/comments about Dual Degrees

1)What is this M.Sc. degree?

M.Sc means Master of Science....It is the same M.Sc. degree you get after doin a Bachelor of Science(B.Sc.)...When you do normally M.Sc. takes 5 years ( 3 years B.Sc. + 2 years M.Sc.) but in BITS you can do an M.Sc. in 4 years without the intermediate B.Sc. degree

2)But dual degree is for 5 years right?

Ya it is...M.Sc. is actually a separate degree...but the BITS system allows every student doing an M.Sc.(hons) { not M.Sc (tech) } to take a dual in engineering/b.pharm and complete both the degrees in 5 years..At the end of 5 years you get 2 degrees...one Masters in Science and the other Bachelors in Engineering

3)What is the scope of M.Sc.?

Same as what a normal Masters in Science guy can do...With an engineering degree he can opt for all the options an engineering guy can go for...and also think of any permutation and combination of these 2 degrees

4) Does every guy with an M.Sc degree get a dual in engineering/b.pharm?

Ya every guy does....Dont believe in rumours...

5)Can you not choose an engineering dual/
b.pharm ?

Ya you can prefer not to go for an engineering/b.pharm dual...some guys opt for another science degree...some just leave BITS doin only M.Sc after 4 years

Indian Premier League and Indian Political League

I know this is not my personal blog but just wanted to talk about some other things apart from BITSAT

So pretty simple...post your tournament favourites for IPL 2009 and for the political league your comments on the Congress victory in LokSabha

My favourties : Deccan Chargers followed by Chennai Super Kings

And for Congress winning : Thank god we don't have a communist supported government...But I am sad for NDA especially Advani

P.S : Will update the post if I come across some sensible/funny comments

BITSAT 2009 begins

Today the 9 of May 2009 BITSAT entrance for admission into BITS Pilani begins.
The team of BITSexam wishes all the students best of luck for BITSAT

Those who have given BITSAT please post your comments about BITSAT here - Click Here

Also compare it with other exams like AIEEE and give your feedback...It will be a good tool to judge the level of actual BITSAT and the expected cutoffs

Discussions till now:
  • Abhijith said : "Got 257. chemistry pretty tough. but overall felt easier than AIEEE"
  • Purvi said : "Hey guys i gave d xam on d 9th...n scored 264...m disappointed....bt d level of the paper is vry easy as compared 2 aieee...accordin 2 me phy n maths were completely doable n attemptable....an average student can easily score in phy...bt i faced problems in chem basically...!! "
  • I say : " Study chemistry properly...I have always said that...and will always say that :)"...And do check this link - How to crack BITSAT Chemistry - Do Click Here
  • Anonymous 1 said : "This blog rocks isnt it? i love it it helps me a lot"
  • I say : It sure does :)
  • shireesh said : "hey arvind where did you get placed from BITS???"
  • I say : "Wrong place for posting the question" ...anyways I am a dualite...will be placed in 5-2...my intern will start from July 4 in some XYZ company...waitig for my PS-2 results :D
  • Anonymous said : sir don't you think luck factor does play a role in bitsat?
  • I say : It sure does...dont call it luck though...call it your destiny....And always be the one to make your destiny not that one waiting for it...So in short complete the syllabus :)
  • Abhinav said : Scored 327. as far as the level of paper is concerned it was surely easier than AIEEE. Feel pity for the guy who said that chem was 10 times tougher than EEE's chem. everything was pretty easy. questions were short ant to the point nothing very confusing. The conceptual part in physics was missing while chem didn't contain the practical part at all (salt analysis and all that). Maths was ok. Mainly focussed on Calculus. The only part which i found slightly tough was English just because it took time to read those long passages and then keep the main points in mind while answering. committing 25 mistakes did cost me a bit. guys just keep the the time factor in mind and u'll have fun.
  • I say : Luck fellow...not all people get paper from the topics you prepare.... I have always said that BITSAT is easier than AIEEE except for the extra topics and more of memory based questions in Chemistry...rest questions are as I have always told - "Straight forward i.e. Basic Model Problems /Basic Formulae "
  • Siddharth via Email :
I gave the BITSAT on 12th may 12:30 to 3:30.
    I have scored 422 marks.
I'll like to thank you for the valuable guidance on your site bitsexam.
Actually little material is available, a drawback.
But can be used to one's advantage. Indeed the key is to do the syllabus properly.
Because it is not necessary that you get the equal no. of questions from each topic.
In my paper, there were few from organic but many from Stereochem.
I found that there were many questions from the old NCERT Chemistry(2006 and before),especially the last few chapters.
Another thing is that if there are even upto 10 questions left out of 150 with 20-25 minutes left, one can take calculated risks and go for the extra questions. 15 minutes is quite enough to do the extra questions.
I found that the extra questions were of easy to medium level. In my opinion if time permits one should attempt these as these can help increase the score.
The sample test(full length) on goiit.com is very good and gives useful practise as compared to other individual subjects tests(these are better to get an idea or for practise, but a full length one allows time management skills, too) like those provide by you or tcyonline. A full length test helps increase the confidence and preparation level manifold.
  • I say : Congrats bro.....Yup I will say it as loud as possible.....try to complete your syllabus and revise basic formulas/model problems :)
  • Neha via email :
My BITSAT went ok, scored 345 (hoping for Computer Science in Goa...)
Physics and Chemistry were around AIEEE level... Maths was similarly manageable, much easier than this year's AIEEE. My BITSAT English section was unfortunately about the same level as SAT Critical Reading.
  • Ashar said : Bitsat was comparatively easier than AIEEE, as was expected.

But I found some questions of Chemistry rather absurd, memory based questions from the unexpected corners of the book. Well, this is inevitable. Not time consuming though (1 min/ques).

Physics was mostly conceptual. 5-6 numericals. Topics of XIth were there in almost equal proportion. One can attempt 90% questions if prepared well for JEE.

Logical Reasoning was quite easy. I found a few questions of English slightly difficult & time-consuming, especially the passage based questions (I had 4-5 of them) and odd-one out (in which I could understand only two options).

Maths will take time, so better take aside 70-80 min. for this section, and attempt at last. There were a few questions meant to be answered by checking options (could save a lot of time, but requires presence of mind there). Many questions are exactly from AIEEE or JEE previous papers. And don't forget trigonometry, there were about 5-6 questions from it in my paper (some couln't be answered by satisfying options). Quite a few questions from co-ordinate will test the speed of candidate. So, practice is must. Taking maths exam in front of PC is different, and does consume more time.

    My Bitsat score: 346
    Expected scores of -
    JEE: 211
    AIEEE: 291

In VIT, I secured 193 rank.
  • I say : I would always advice any guy/gal to take Physics at the end...If you have good practice and are good with elimination techniques then you can complete maths in 50-60 mins which is good considering you have 180 min :)

Last moment tips for cracking BITSAT

Have any doubt...I mean any doubt whatever topic - Click to Comment

The things to concentrate on from now on - A summary of tips I have talked till now and some other extra tips :)...Hope you like this post

1)The time you are taking for solving each problem - Never take more
than 1 minute to solve a problem...If you cannot solve a problem
within a minute just leave it and come back to that question again
when you are done .
2)In the first 2 hours attempt only those questions which you are
confident of...If you have only a vague idea about a question just
skip it and later come back after 2 hours
3)You must read all 150 questions...who knows the 150th question may
be the easiest
4)Start with English...then Chemistry....then Maths and then Physics
5)Concentrate on the areas of you weakness...find out the topics in
which you are regularly committing mistakes...Try to revise those
topics
6)Try to read the extra topics not present in AIEEE or JEE syllabus
especially chemistry...you will get many memory based
questions...solving them means gaining extra marks as well as saving
time for other questions
7) If you think your target is 300 you will always end up with scores
below 300....Aim for the highest and you will reach where you are
destined to...Have a goal to solve atleast 140 questions in every mock
paper and read all 150 questions in every mock paper...This way you
will surely succeed

Myths about BITSAT question paper pattern

Here are some myths about BITSAT question paper pattern and some other doubts - I have given clear explanation for each myth...Just read the whole post before coming to any conclusion or doing anything silly

  • Is it true that the questions are easy at the start of BITSAT and tougher later on - No they are not - It is just a myth
This is how your friends who have BITSAT date ahead of you try to fool you.If the above statement were true why is it that most people who score 350+ have written their exam at the end of May or beginning of June.

Let us see how BITSAT question paper is generated
  1. There is a huge question bank of questions
  2. Questions are rated as easy, moderate and tough( we don't know how this rating is done)
  3. Every question paper has almost equal number of easy questions, moderate questions and tough questions
  4. For every few days(say 7 days) they use a part of the question bank which has equal number of easy, moderate and tough questions
  5. After these few days(say 7 days) they remove this part of question bank and go with another part.
  6. So at any point of time your question paper has equal number of easy, tough and moderate questions so the whole thing about BITSAT easy initially and tough later is a myth

  • Can't we share the questions after we write BITSAT
Technically you can but what is the point of sharing the questions?
  1. By sharing the questions you are helping your friends but at the same time reducing your's and some other genuine hard workers chance of getting selected into BITS
  2. The part of question bank from which questions are shared is removed periodically(check the above post) so even if you share the questions they will be useless to people after few days
  3. GMAT ( MBA entrance examination) had similar issues...One of the websites had actually allowed it's member s to post the questions they faced....GMAT authorities had taken strict action...they guy who setup the website was put in jail and all those who shared the questions their registration cancelled - Is any site willing to risk itself when you know it is of no use
  4. Most importantly - the Question bank is huge....it is like and endless pool of questions - Even if you share questions the probability of you coming across exactly same question is almost zero- instead if you share the idea behind the questions - what kind of questions are given - what topics to concentrate on and other stuff it will be helpful
  5. I was the first batch to write BITSAT .... I had a keen interest in this posting of questions stuff...which I realised later that it will not be helpful at all
  6. A person instead of checking for the exact questions can spend his time solving BITSAT model papers close to BITSAT
  • Is equal weightage given to all topics
  1. The answer is a strict no...the questions are taken randomly only based on their toughness level...your paper may contain all 40 questions from a particular topic ( but it is not possible theoretically)
  2. But generally people get equal number of question from all topics
  • Why do you always insist on completing the syllabus :)
  1. As I have said in previous myth that your question paper contains equal number of easy, moderate and tough questions
  2. Say a guy has studied only Physical and Organic Chemistry and has not studied any section in Inorganic Chemistry - if his paper has the toughest question from Both Physical and Organic Chemistry but the easiest from Inorganic he is at complete loss
  3. You cant solve the tough problems so you loose marks - you dont know the exact level of Inorganic topics because you have not studied Inorganic
  4. So it is a must you complete your syllabus for BITSAT :)
Do post your comments here - Click here - I am thrilled to answer any comments in this topic

Crack BITSAT Physics - Tips and Tricks

Physics is the most tricky part in any Engineering entrance examination. It is more about analyzing the given situation with those of the standard models...You need to keep your eyes open for that tricky part which might be the difference between you getting a good score in BITSAT or not.....

In short PHYSICS is the most important subject for any Engineering Entrance examination not only BITSAT.

Many BITSians (students from BITS Pilani) felt that BITSAT physics was tougher than AIEEE as it was more tricky, required more of analyzing things and having a clear idea of concepts

How to study Physics for BITSAT?

  • Preparation of Physics for BITSAT or any other engineering entrance examination is same- Ask questions...Think about a question....Spend time analysing standard questions....what variations are possible with a given question
  • It is not essential to solve lengthy problems but it is very important to understand the underlying concept while solving problems
  • Blindly following a standard method during practicing problems is not good....Just question yourself why this method is being followed....
  • Solve the theory questions at the back of HC VERMA....It will give you crystal clear idea about any topic
  • Every topic in PHYSICS is important according to me....One of my friends had 19 out of his 40 questions from Mechanics/related to Mechanics....Another had around 17 from Electrostatics....Another had 14 from Optics...So if you think you can just study 12 class syllabus and write BITSAT or only 11 class syllabus then you might get through in Maths and Chemistry but not Physics as so many topics are inter related
  • A surface tension problem can be related to coservation of Energy problem or a thermodynamics problem can be coupled with a Kinematics problem - It is huge world of permuations and combinations of different topics
  • Though there are not many topics in Physics which are straight forward and not that tricky you need to study those
  • People who are good with Mechanics generally score better in any Engineering exams - so guys who have not done free body diagrams and some other core mechanics concept you need to spend some time with these topics
  • Electrostatics has the shortest and trickiest questions....try by hearting some basic model problems involving Bio Savarts Law and Amperes law
  • Optics probably has more method based problems than any other topic....try to revise these optics
  • And as always dont forget to by heart the basic problems and formulas
  • And finally try to complete your syllabus
Here are few topics which people generally neglect/write BITSAT without much preparation..But these topics are important for BITSAT

1.4 Fundamental measurements in Physics (Vernier calipers, screw gauge, Physical balance etc)

2.5 Uniform circular motion
2.6 Relative motion

4.2 Conservation of momentum - Very important

6.5 Conservation of angular momentum - Very important
6.6 Rolling motion

7.2 Gravitational potential energy, Escape velocity

8.3 Viscosity and Surface Tension - try checking out the water bubble problems
8.4 Bernoulli’s theorem

10.4 Doppler Effect - might get easy problems from this topics

11.5 2nd law of thermodynamics, Carnot engine – Efficiency and Coefficient of performance

14. Magnetic Effect of Current
14.1 Biot-Savart’s law and its applications
14.2 Ampere’s law and its applications
14.3 Lorentz force, force on current carrying conductors in a magnetic field
14.4 Magnetic moment of a current loop, torque on a current loop, Galvanometer and its conversion to voltmeter and
ammeter

17. Modern Physics -Important - Just by hearting stuff - Easy problems
17.1 Dual nature of light and matter – Photoelectric effect, De Broglie wavelength
17.2 Atomic models – Rutherford’s experiment, Bohr’s atomic model
17.3 Hydrogen atom spectrum
17.4 Radioactivity
17.5 Nuclear reactions : Fission and fusion, binding energy

One of the guys asked my Is it enough if I study for 5 hours a day - I said - "Ya sure......but you need to spend 10 out of the next 19 hours solving Physics problem's in your mind"

The best site for BITSAT preparation - has lots of resources :)

Blogs and Sites you need to stay away for BITSAT
  1. Ankur Gupta - I respect him a lot for his AIEEE/JEE analysis but his BITSAT analysis sucks
  2. Rutsum - Never ever visit his blog...he has no knowledge of any engineering entrance exam
  3. www[dot]bitsatsamplepapers[dot]com - Safe to stay away from this site....all ads no matter
  4. www[dot]bitsat[dot]in - By PAGE guys...they just want to exploit students
  5. www[dot]successcds[dot]net - Their main aim is to earn money - they dont care about the students...no papers on this site...they only want to sell cd's
