BITS Pilani - University Industry Linkages

BITS Pilani is looking at long-term programme with international universities and corporates. As a first step, talks have been initiated with the US-based MIT, which is expected to be crystallised in the next 24 months. Apart from international collaborations, the institute is also exploring joint partnerships with domestic companies for setting up 10 centres of excellence (CoE) in respective segments for conducting live projects and internships.
VS Rao, director, BITS Pilani, says, "A MIT team visited us and we are in talks to have a long-term collaboration with MIT. This is part of our vision to have quick wins with long term goals." However, the talks are still in the nascent stage but Rao pins it on the positive side as the institute enjoys a good reputation in areas of science and technology. Incidentally, the institute has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a five-star ranking.
BITS-Pilani is also planning to create a research park where an industry body can create a facility inside the campus and involve students and the faculty members. It is also looking to set up an entrepreneurial park to help entrepreneurs to translate ideas into action. BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad campus is the fourth one after Pilani, Goa and Dubai, with an outlay of Rs 270 crore having modular and flexible curriculum, university-industry linkage and practice school programmes.
"Besides, we are also in the process of negotiations with domestic companies both in IT and pharmaceutical sciences and proposals have been sent to Cyprus Semiconductors, Dr Reddy's Laboratories and the likes to help students from the final semester in their internship from all the three centres," Rao added.
Meanwhile, GSS America Infotech, a software development and consulting company, has signed a memorandum of understanding with BITS Pilani to establish a centre of excellence to offer a platform for service alliance for long-term benefit of BITS students. Besides, it would be sponsoring top three performers for the Masters of Engineering programme offered by the institute on a yearly basis. GSS and BITS will develop global campus management system as the first product in this CoE. GSS America Infotech is eyeing transformational acquisition in the next nine months. The company has received approvals from the board to raise up to $75 million for the proposed acquisition which could be either in remote infrastructure management or security management.

Children of God or Children of Coaching Centres

This post is not for the thousands of students who come to visit our site for engineering entrance examination preparation. This post is specifically for the parents who consider their children nothing less than machines and their soul aim is to get a top rank in engineering entrance examinations without giving a damn about how their children feel. As I say again and again - You can only provide your child wih proper facilities for a better education - It is upto the child to realise his interests and pursue according to his career according to his interests. If he/she feels that his future lies in an engineering college I am sure he will give more than 100% to get into one of the finest but if you force them it may backfire if not at the +2 stage but surely after his engineering.

Please read this interesting article on IIT JEE coaching in Express Buzz

Dear Dr K, I am a concerned mother, and like every concerned mother, I want my son to study in IIT after he graduates from school. He is seven-year-old and in class second now. What is ideally the earliest age to enrol him in IIT-JEE coaching classes?
— Laliita Jeevan

Dear Laliita,I am afraid that it might already be too late for your child. By the class second, most kids who are serious about getting into one of the IITs have already had three to four years of solid JEE coaching. With the recent introduction of pre-natal JEE coaching clinics, it has become possible for kids to prepare for the JEE before they are even born.Still, if your child is to have any hope at all of getting into one of the IITs, it is absolutely essential that you begin his JEE coaching immediately. You must enrol him in a coaching institute that makes use of the time when he usually plays, sleeps, or undertakes any other pointless activity. If he wishes to catch up with those who have already begun their coaching, he will have to forego his sleep for the next 10 years or more. There are some critics of such intensive coaching programmes, who believe that such packed schedules will rob a child of his or her childhood, and induce unnecessary and unhealthy stress in him or her. This argument is, of course, rubbish. Experts agree that the notion of having a ‘childhood’ is overrated, and this so-called ‘childhood’ will only be detrimental to the child’s chances at being admitted to an IIT. On the issue of stress, no one has said it better than famed JEE Coach Burgeon N Bess. This is a healthy routine for any child who has begun coaching early enough:“Nowadays people are talking about stress. I am not referring to force per unit area. I am referring more to mental and physical strain. I am not referring to ratio of change in dimensions to original dimensions. People think that children are facing too much stress nowadays. They obviously cannot think very well because they are wrong. Where is the stress in a child's life? All he or she does is get up early in the morning, go to tuition, come back, go to school, come back, go to tuition, go to JEE Class, go home, do homework for two hours, then study for five hours, and then maybe catch a little snooze. Is this a stressful routine? I think not. There is ample time in this schedule for relaxation. This time should be used for hard work and studies. Children should be initiated early into the coffee habit so that they are able to stay awake until late at night. Weekends is for recreational activities such as casual differentiation and integration, and preparation for AIEEE. These habits will ensure a child's stress-free life.”Only if your child gets into an IIT will his life be of any worth. If he is unable or unwilling to do so, you have failed as a parent. After all, all the world needs is more engineers (who give up engineering to do MBAs). Your child should pursue subjects like the pure sciences, or art, or music, only if your child is interested in pursuing failure. Everyone else simply has to enter IIT, or die trying.

Wishing you luck,
Yours questionably,
Dr K

I hope this article is an eye opener to most parents

How to crack English in BITSAT English and Logical Reasoning - PART 2

This post is 2nd part of the How to Crack English in BITSAT English and Logical Reasoning series. It is advisable to read the first part before reading this post.

As discussed in the earlier post, there are 4 models of questions- Synonyms and Antonyms, Jumbled Paragraphs, Questions on Essay, and Grammar. This post discusses tips and tricks to crack BITSAT English by exploiting these question models.I am giving these tips considering you will allocate at least 1 month of time to prepare for BITSAT English and Logical Reasoning.

Synonyms and Antonyms:

  • This is the most common model of question and you can expect at least 2 questions of this type.
  • Learn Parts of Speech from a good book .
  • Try to get hold of a GRE preparation material from some one among your neighbors, relatives or friends and learn some important words.
  • If you have more time try to read from dictionary. If you don't have time, you need not by-heart totally.Though you may not remember it clearly, you will at least have idea about the word.
  • If a word that is unknown to you is given in the test, try to identify the Parts of Speech of the word. The answer should also be belonging to same Parts of Speech. Most of the times, at least half of the options are in other parts of Speech and you might be able to identify the right answer.

 Jumbled Paragraphs:

  • Among all the models, this type could be the easy scoring model.
  • You need to have an idea about how the sequence of events could be.
  • Try to read newspaper daily and visualize the structure/ sequence of sentences in paragraphs
  • During the test time, its always best to identify which sentence could be beginning and concluding sentences of the paragraph.Once you identify the starting and concluding lines, its very easy to identify the sequence of sentence.
  • Even if you could not identify anything from the paragraph, don't just skip the question. This is the easiest scoring model and don't miss it. Try to see the options given and choose which of them is giving a meaningful paragraph.

Question on Essay:

  • This type of questions, once are presented, will come with at least 2 questions. So, if you understand the paragraph well, you can answer minimum 6 marks easily. If you are unable to understand its a big loss.Hence, spend more time in reading and understanding the paragraph/essay very well.
  • Though this type of questions were easy in early years of BITSAT, they are becoming difficult year by year. So, you have to concentrate very well on this type of models. You can't just randomly guess answers for this model.
  • Like for Jumbled Paragraphs, Reading Newspaper Daily helps even for this model of questions.
  • While answering these questions, don't make any assumptions. Answer only from what is given in the essay. For example, you can't assume India is an independent country while answering the question because, some times the essay might be of pre-independent India.

Grammar:

  • This is the model with maximum types and number of questions. So, you have to concentrate on these questions to score high marks in English.
  • You need to be very strong in your English Grammar and that is the only best way to score well in this.
  • Learn Parts of Speech, Tenses, Verb forms, Conditional Sentences, Types of Sentences etc., to score well in this exam.
  • Follow some good book like Wren & Martin and strengthen your basics.
  • Though you have some good knowledge in English language, still don't neglect it. Start from the basics.
With the above tips, I am sure you are going to crack BITSAT English and achieve some good BITSAT scores.

The Key to success - Board Exams

One must realise by this time that it is very tough to score good marks in any competitive exam with properly understanding the basics and this process starts with your board examinations. For most of you it is the ideal time to complete those topics which you are not very confident or you haven't even started. There are many off topics which people ignore for competitive exams and at the end blame their 12 boards preparation for their failure.

Also BITSAT needs an 80% in PCM - so do write them properly

You must also understand that 12 exams are as important as any other examinations. Your career may depend on your 10 and 12 marks especially with most IIM giving more weigthage to 10 and 12 scores rather than your actual CAT scores( provided you want to pursue an MBA via CAT). Also performing well in 10,12 and engineering gives the other a notion of your consistency in academics and hence helpful in getting better opportunities for higher studies.

As I say again - The Key is in completing your syllabus and it all starts with your board examinations - (whether it is CBSE, IPE or any other board).

By Heart Periodic Table in Chemistry

This post is to explain the importance of  memorizing the periodic table.
As many of you have asked how to prepare for Chemistry the first step is to realize that unless one completes the syllabus it is very tough to get a decent score in BITSAT. BITSAT unlike other competitive exams like JEE/AIEEE focuses a bit more on the memory based questions in Chemistry and you could find lots of questions which can only be answered if and only if you remember the Periodic table completely. There are many questions which can be answered just by knowing the periodic table especially in Inorganic Chemistry in which questions are asked are comparison based especially related to Halides and IA group.

Click on the pic below for the Periodic table and it would be good if you take a large size printout and keep it in your room. Make a habit to revise every aspect of the periodic table every morning for 2 minutes as soon as you get up.It will be very helpful for all the competitive exams

    Periodic Table for Chemistry
This is a part of the long series of how to prepare for BITSAT and how to get a very good score in BITSAT. Please keep checking the blog for more information and other related articles.
